i can't comment on the Acer or the Lite Ons, but i have used alot of Aopens and they seem to be really good drives. i haven't had a problem yet.
off the topic, but i've heard that AOpen is a division of Acer, anyone know anything about this?

Choosing between 24X and 32X ? Think about this, you might find it difficult to find 32X certified blank CD's. I have a hard enough time finding 24X. Plus when you do find them, you may pay a lot more. Then again, a 32X isn't much more and you can always drop down the write speed.

I've used both lite-ons and acers. Just got a 24X Lite-on a couple of weeks ago, and have not had any problems making cd's using Nero.

I just bought a Lite-ON 32x/12x/40x CD-RW drive to replace my Sony Expressa 8x/4x/32 CD-RW drive. I bought 32x CD-R certified media and I still burn CDs at the same speed of 7 minutes (for a 700MB CD-R) like my older Sony CD-RW drive. I run the Lite-ON CD-RW drive on a PIII 750MHz/Ultra 66 ATA/256MB PC100 SDRAM/WIN2000Pro/Nero (that came bundled with the drive). I am upset at the performance but really haven't tried to investigate what the cause may be for the slowness. I'd go with the 24x unless the 32x is only $10 more.

I have an acer 20X and though it isn't truly a 20X,(it's a 20X MAX it only hits 20X write speeds for a brief part of writing) It does well enough for me. I haven't had any trouble with it. It runs NERO great and clone cd makes impeccable backups with it.

Every Lite-On CDRW that I have seen has become faulty within 4 weeks of usage. Most are DOA straight out of the box.
IMO it is worth spending the little bit extra and buying a Plextor. Warranties are first class (I removed the bezel on my 24x10x40 and the paint I used actually melted it. A quick email to Plextor, and even though it wasn't a warranty claim, they sent me a new bezel free of charge NEXT DAY DELIVARY from Belgium). The Plextor 40x CDRW is now so cheap that others simply aren't worth looking at IMO.

Darren, I am sorry you have had problems with the Lite-Ons.. I have fitted 5 so far this year and they are still running very well. Sounds like you got all the bad ones in one order!!
