Did it ever work right. If not, return it for a new drive, if its still under warranty.

There are a few things that can account for this. First how fast your hard drive is. If you hard drive doesnt keep up with the buffer on the cdr it won't work right. Next you have a good amount of ram i find to actually keep things in order. Secondly check your jumpers and make sure you have it on slave or cable select and on the right cord setting.

I have a CRW8424S here with similar problems that it won't recognise any blank media regardless of burning software used. Waiting for Yamaha Tech Support to send me RMA advice but this has been going on for about 6 weeks now waiting!!! May have to give them another holler as it is pissing me off being without a burner BTW all other SCSI burners I have 'borrowed' work fine on the setup, just this one individual writer and the store won't take it back as it no longer exists!!!! Only had it since December 2000 as well!

My HP 9100i CD Writer burned lots of coasters until I set the IDE controller to run in DMA mode (instead of PIO mode). Now, I hardly ever burn a coaster. Just an idea...

If it's still under Warranty, I'd suggest you to RMA it ASAP!
I've seen similar problems with Yamaha CD-RWs and this was the only solution.
