If you've got the hardware to run XP, then go for it. Be aware that some software and hardware won't run in XP as opposed to 98, but XP is way more stable and robust than any Win9x/ME. I'm actually looking to upgrade my ageing PC just so I can get into XP from 98SE.

If you go to www.microsoft.com/windowsxp you can download the upgrade advisor that will analyze your computer and let you know about any potential problems.

I have used 95, 95C, 98, 98SE, ME, NT, 2000, and now XP Corporate. Of them all, I like XP best. Think of the gaming+ capabiliy of 98SE combined with the stability of 2000 and you have XP..

Be aware of the product activation problems referenced in another thread.

Keep in mind too if you have any DOS, windows 3.1, or Win32 applications which ran under 3.1, you'll have to throw them out for an upgrade to XP.

It also depends on what kinds of hardware and applications you have too. Keep in mind.

The main differences between home and pro versions are multiple processor support and the ability to log INTO a win2k domain server. These are only supported in the pro version. Everything else is very close to the same.
