Post XP problems shutting down then starting.

Running XP Pro on AMD 1.4, CD& CDRW. KG7-raid motherboard. System will not shut down by itself, I have to manual push off button, then restarting it takes anywheres from 3-10 times to get the post beep to start. any ideas?

the first thing I would check on this system would be the PSU by substitution. (ie borrow one) then I would check for periferals ie h/d cd-rom USB devices ie: remove them all and try again.

also worth noting a lot (not all) m/boards req the fan to be spinning to start up , if so check tha the fan (if 3pin ) is connected to the correct set of pins on the board (if 2/4 pin) substitue to 3 pin device

go into your bios and set things to default (optimal later) , check its booting agp first (if fitted) check that cpu and/or memory are set at correct speed (if nessesarry slow CPU multiplier down) don,t overclock memory

and finally regarding shut down , if all the above solve some probs , then go to bios and set up power options (everyone will discuss there veriants of this later -dependant on O/S)

try the above suggestions and then reply with outcome

replied just before you , i also thought to ask about cd software , but on re-reading the question noticed that he was also having probs booting the thing , i didn,t bother with the creator thing , as if this was the prob it would just BSOD on him , regarding the shutdown aspect i think it,s more to do with power settings.

I think if he sorts out his startup probs (which does "sound" like a PSU prob) then every thing can be made to fall in place by either using ALT+CTL+DEL (task manager) and a copy of MSCONFIG

an carefull rereading.. IT does sound like a power issue. I would suspect however that it may be with the board also.

If you have a multimeter, measure the "power good" line from the power supply (should be at +5 volts). Also, if you have access to a port 80 card, that will tell you almost instantly what the issue is.
