Newbie to Win XP.

I just got a copy of Win XP and am ready to install it to my system.

first I have Win98/win2k dual booted as of right now.
I would like to install winXP but not lose Win98. I don't care about the Win2K.

Obviously I haven't used Win XP before So I would like to install it to the Drive with Win 2k, what I am going to do is disconect my Win 98 drive and format thw Win2k drive and install win XP to it.

what I need to know is if I install Win XP and then put my Win 98 drive back in will there be any Problems?
Or can I just insert the XP CD right now and install it to the formatted drive.

need advice as you can see.

Anyhow, DON'T DISCONNECT YOUR 98 DRIVE You'll just have problems. If you have both OSes on separate drives this is good. Format the 2k drive since you don't want it anymore and then throw the XP cd in setting it to primary loader in the BIOS. When it comes up, it will ask you where you want XP installed... BE SURE TO PICK THE RIGHT DRIVE and then proceed to install it. This will also configure your boot.ini menu correctly so you'll have a decent dual boot set up

Good news that's what I wanted to hear Now I will not lose my Over customized Win 98 drive.

as for the High speed issue and drivers?

i tried a XP/98SE duel boot a while back. Booted into 98, then into XP to install apps and drivers. finished with that and tired to back to 98 got a I/O error (rest of message runs off side of screen). Nothing in the KB article helped.

XP is on C:, 98 is on E:, with D: being a data storage drive. any ideas on what went wrong incase i decide to try this again?

i have a similar setup, Win98 on HD1 and XPPro on HD2. best bet is to full format your second drive, set your BIOS to boot the XP CD first, and make sure you set the install path to your formatted HD. dual boot systems rawk

i also wouldn't recommend installing XP from within 98, ie, loading 98, sticking in your CD and running the XP install from within 98. did this and had major probs.

oh yeah, Soundblaster 128 will work just fine with the built in XP drivers.

Currently Setting up WIn XP Pro and when it reaches 34 minutes remaining it makes the screen flash every 10 seconds. the hard drive seems to be working and the text about win XP programs still changes every 25-30 seconds but I leave it for 1/2 and nothing changes it always says 34 minutes.
I have Formatted the drive and installed it through Win98
Can some one help?

You want to do a clean install. Also make sure your bios is up to date. If your stil having problems it is probably a hardware conflict. Remove anything that might not be common (weird USB device or an of brand NIC etc.) and try the install.

What Vid Card Are You Running? If ATI Radeon Download the new drivers from ATI and boot into safe mode to install. The radeon drivers that came with Windows XP are messssssssssed up!!!!

Sound Blaster isn't out yet, maybe end of November. Not sure about the rest. Xp should load default drivers for all of them though, but the Scanner may be a problem. I know Win 2k didn't like a lot of Scanners, and I have yet to attempt to set up my scanner to find issues. (Waiting for HP to come with a XP version of their Simple Back up software so I can get a backup of my computer.)

I'd reccommend booting from the XP cd as opposed to upgrading through 98.

habib - tell me more about the Radeon probs. Ive got a 64DDR, and it is choppy as hell in UT since going XP. I like XP, so want to keep it. I upgraded from ATI site, but still the same chopping.

When I went to install Windows XP it got all the way to the end except the last boot of Windows It just went to a black screen and locked up. All I had to do was boot into Safe Mode and Install the new ATI Windows XP Driver.

Just for some info for those of you that dual boot systems. There is a cool utility out at connectix.com. It is called virtual PC where you physically run the opsys from inside another one. So if you are keeping an operating system for a small appz or something check it out. It does what it says! As for the person that wants to back up their system I would recommend using Drive Image from powerquest. It burns your image straight to cd and even makes the cd bootable.

As for the original post about install problems with XP, well first, as all should know, make sure you have a legit copy of windows. Most of the problems I have helped people with have been traced back to a bad copy!! Just spend the money and get the real thing--Less problems. As for you problems with dual booting, in my opinion you are probably gonna have to start from scratch because you formated your win2k partition for dual booting--bad move!!! Since it was already set for dual booting it had done the boot menu fix. Now you are probably getting boot errors! You should have just upgraded your win2k! Well I don't know a fix for your predictament except to format both and start from scratch because you have already messed up the boot sector! If you want to make sure you aren't having cd problems remove your win98 hard drive and do a fresh install on the old win2k hard drive. If it works fine then you cd, and hardware are good to go--It is just having a problem reseting your boot menu!! Good Luck!!
