[RESOLVED] "C" Drive Not In Device Manager

Packard Bell 486, 1.6G "c", 540M "d",cdrom "e",Win98.

"C" drive in explorer, but not in 'drives' in device manager. ['d' drive is. ]
Performance says drive using compatibility mode paging / reduces overall performance. Deleted hard disk controllers, drvdata.bin,drvidx.bin as per microsoft knowledge base info. Didn't find 'noide' listed in registry. Restarted system and everything was the same again. System runs slowly, sometimes can't write to 'A' drive, 'sys has perf illegal operation' message. Scanned for viruses with recent program. I have run out of things to try, any help will be greatly appreciated.

have you REMed out everything in the autoexec.bat and config.sys?

check IRQs as well...i once put in a video card that knocked out the HD controller and sound and network card

You might have a problem with the drive overlay software, if you are using one. Run the Disk Manager or EZ Drive software for the drive and see if anything looks askew. Also, run FDISK to look at the partitions. Check BIOS and make sure the IDE controller is enabled. I have seen Phoenix BIOS that will autodetect a hard drive, with the IDE controller disabled on an Intel Premiere motherboard. Please repost and let us know how you make out.

if you can restart in dos to C:\ then try

1 Delete PCI Bus in properties of my computer, device manager, system devices, have driver disks & win 98 cd handy, almost all devices have saved their setup info somewhere on your hard drive, so use find to locate them you will realise that they all live in just a few places, if not use setup disks later to fix drivers.
This will re-install all the drivers the nearest thing to running setup.

2. run setup on the cd, this will leave programs intact but will tamper with any downloads from the windows update site, virtual machine, direct x6 etc, which you will have to download again (this could be a lot so use 1 above first), note you may find that you have a copy of ie5 setup lurking on your HD so you might not have to download this again.

If you can't start in dos mode to c:\ I would take a stab at a bios fault, clear the cmos if you know how, if not re-post, and / or update bios on your motherboard.
