Sometimes the programs have a small button, or a check box that disables them from running on startup. You jsut have to look through their proeprties, options, etc... menus
Also there is third party software that can be helpful. RegCleaner is a program that removes old registry entries as well as programs that startup on boot.
Go to www.jv16.org to download it but be careful not delete anything important.

Two other places to look:
- WIN.INI --> under the [load] and [run] sections
- regedit --> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
- and possibly HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run
Someone will probably have a utilility that takes care of these.

easiest way to disable things is to use this little program, it doesn't need to be installed and you can run it from CD.
Startup control panel
great and easy as hell to use

If there are certain programs that you don't want to start automatically when you start the computer there are a couple of ways to shut them down. First is to right click the start menu, click Open, Programs then Startup. Delete any icons in there that represent programs that you don't want to start up.
The second way is to go to Start>Run and type MSConfig the press Enter. Under General, click Selective Startup. Then after you do this click the Start-up tab then uncheck any programs that you don't want to run automatically. This should make you computer run more smoothly.
The only programs you really need in startup is the Antivirus. Other than that you are on your own. I don't know your computer well enough to give you advice on which to use and which to keep.
Good Luck,

If you or one of your friends have access to a Win98 machine, copy the msconfig.exe from the Windows folder to a floppy......Run it from within Windows - Start>Run>A:\msconfig - and go to the Startup tab...works mint

I'll second that. Though it's not as thourough as I'd like. it doesn't look at the "Run-" keys. It's still the best bet IMHO.
But, the main culprits can be found by going to Start->Run "regedit" and navigating to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
good luck~
