    Boot problems with XP backup

I have backed up my old hard disk to a another one using XP back up. But this new drive can't boot. Does anybody know what's wrong?

    Thanks in advance,

    Doruk

The drive that you backed up is not bootable. It is a backup of the data only.

If you want to clone the drive and make it bootable, use Norton Ghost.

I'm assuming that you're replacing an old drive with a new one.

Did you use the automated system recovery option in NTbackup (xp backup)?

If not, here's how you can fix it.

    1) Boot to your xp CD and select recovery console. If xp doesn't find a windows installation to log into your screwed. Put the old drive back in. If it does find a windows install to log into, log into it with the original administrator password.

    2) Run fixboot c: This will rewrite the mbr.

    3) Run bootcfg /rebuild This will correct any erros in your boot.ini

    Reboot and hope it works.

Also, you need to make sure you have ntldr, ntdetect.com, and a boot.ini in your root directory.
