missing "interent zone"
Hi all. It's been awhile but I can't find any info on this problem.
Client's computer - Win98SE, I.E 5.5 Sp2 with all current updates and patches. It's on cable. When you start it up with default login - ie: hit escape at the login box the system starts fine. You can start internet explorer and it surfs as it should. When you log on as a user (it has multiple users) and start internet explorer the "Web Zone content" displayed on the lower right of the browser shows "restricted zone" and you can't get to almost all websites. The links flash in the lower left at a zillion miles an hour, hitting stop sometimes helps but usually you have to exit internet explorer. When you click on tools>internet options>security under the web content zone the "internet zone" is missing. "Restricted zone" is shown on the left, then Intanet Zone and Trusted Sites. Where the heck did the "internet zone" go and how can I get it back? This problem exists in all users except the default (administrator?) login. The computer does have 4 different users (wife and kids)so the client can't tell me what any of them may have done. NAV is updated and system is clean. AD-Aware was run and the normal villains done away with. Incredimail is installed - maybe that? Also tried to R & R I.E.5.5. No luck. Is this an I.E problem or perhaps something in the user profiles? Appreciate any hepl. Thanks, Tom

The fact that you can access everything with administrator kinda gives it away... How you fix this in 98 is another matter. A llittle more info please. What happens if you create another administrator ? Can that account access everything? I suspect it will.... |

Do you have Content Advisor enabled in the user profiles by any chance?

Thanks for the replies folks.
Deleted old users and created new ones seemed to work - but then lost half of the programs off the start menu? Format and re-install time.

Why dont you just re add the programs to the start menu. There is no need to reformat b/c of lost links????

We formatted and re-installed because the previuos multiple user scenario setup by the visiting Grandkids was too confusing for the client. He wanted a fresh start. So we did - and reinstalled Incredimail (wife liked it)
and restored backuped messages, favs, docs etc. Still buggy so it's back for another clean install without Incredimail. Anyone else having problems with Incredimail?

& I say this as if the client wants to use this 'feature' & keep using it he will prolly have the same kind of problems all over again. All 9x systems are really single user systems, yeah you can do some sort of pseudo profiling, but the underlying file system (FAT) knows nothing about permissions, you may find it a 'fairer' deal to upgrade to an NTFS based system rather than keep spending money on formats & re-installs...then again that depends how much you charge! But at a guess two re-installs might work out the same as a new shinny o/s, but I suppose you need to install that! Anyways the point is NTFS so xp/2000 based sytems are much less likely to have problems with profiling especially with a clean install. As for Incredmail you have realised its spyware! This is java based so your AV s/w may or may not let you know just what mischief its up to, depends on your Av s/w reaction to over-written windows components. Some AV s/w just 'accepts' this behaviour figuring that you authorised it so you must understand what its done and that's ok... oh yeah sure we all know what every dll does in windoze.. yeah sure.... If you don't want to use outlook or O.E., then Eudora (less virus attacks!), not as cutesy but doesn't mean a re-install every week.... |

And incredimail isn't scanned by most antivirus programs as incoming mail..If you read way way down in that eula they have, you'll find that bit of info
