    will XP pro work on this computer???

    a good friend of mine, geoff, asked me if his computer could run xp pro. and i have no idea, so i will consult you guys:

    here is his specs:

    Pentium 2 - 233 MHz
    64 MB RAM (running on a 66 MHz bus)
    PCI piece of crap video card (4 MB)
    ISA Modem
    ISA Sound Blaster Sound Card
    32x CD-ROM

    it is running ME right now

    No XP Pro will not run on that config.

    to begin with the RAM would have to be AT LEAST 128MB.

    I doubt that the CPU has enough juice either. I've had XP Pro running on a 300mhz pentium II with 256MB of RAM pretty well once.

    98SE or his current ME are probably the best options for that rig (though I'm not a huge ME fan) WIN2K Pro would probably be a little sluggish but generally usuable.

    stick with what he's got.

    WinXP will not even recognize the ISA cards if they are not PnP (http://www.experts-exchange.com/Oper..._20197529.html)

    In any case, my personal experience is that WinXP needs RAM - lots of it. I'd even say the CPU is secondary in importance.

    I've successfully installed and used WinXP on a Celeron 333 (758Mb RAM) and an IBM 233MMX laptop with 256Mb RAM. I'm not going to say their speed rocked, but the performance was comparable if not better than Win9x on the same hardware.
