pesky little problem
ok, not a major problem but it still bugs me and I would like to "fix" it. About a month ago I needed to scan a few receipts with my HP scanjet 4200c scanner. I pulled it out of the closet and hooked it up. XP found it but could not install the software. I tried compatibility mode to run the HP software, but it did not work. Next I removed the scanner, and ordered the XP scanner software CD from HP. here is the odd part... I have this little icon on my task bar that says "Safely Remove Hardware" and it will not go away. The thing just sits there and taunts me! Now that I have the updated software and the scanner attached, how do I remove the icon?
ABIT KX333-R
AMD 2100+
1024 mb pc2100 ddr (a bit overkill I know)
Windows XP Professional (no SP installed)
Windows update is up to date except SP1
HP Scanjet 4200C
I will list the rest of the specs if needed
Thanks,
Dan

i hate that too
right click the taskbar and go to properties
net to hide inactive icons click customize and hide the remove hardware icon.
probably the easiest fix you're gonna find.

Rockhound has got the answer. Unfortunately there isn't any way of removing the icon altogether.

Thanks Rockhound, I checked it out and it was set as "always hide"...... its really not that big of a deal, I thought I had done something wrong and was overlooking something simple. Maybe when I format and re-install XP and the updated scanner software, it wont re-appear. Thats not gonna happen until I have some more cash to for "goodies"...

This little icon is a not-so-new feature of windows used for hot-swappable (meaning you can leave the computer on and change it out) devices, such as PCMCIA (PC Card), USB, etc...windows likes to tell devices to "shut down" before you disconnect them(imagine putting your car in park while it's still in motion...windows is trying to avoid that). The icon is your access to this feature.
