    Question Windows Protection Error

    Hi All,

Must be my week for old computers. Have a client with a IBM Aptiva M61 Model 2168. Windows 95, getting a:

    While initializing device IOS:
Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.

It will start fine in Safe Mode, and on a step by step config., as long as I don't load any Windows drivers. I know it is a driver or a hardware problem. Can anyone narrow it down from this information?

    Thank you as allways

You might try going to Start/Settings/Control Panel/System. Click on Device Manager. Look for any exclamation marks, error messages, etc. This should get you started in the right neighborhood.

Also, you might want to go here to read up on Description of the IOS.LOG file. It talks about using MS-DOS Compatibility mode. Plus some good background info there.

Let us know how it ends up...Good Luck!

    Problem Solved

Found bad driver in IOS.ini and removed it. Re-booted and started getting VXD errors. Re-seated RAM moduels after a good cleaning. And all is well. First time I have ever seen that?!? Go figure.

    Good for you!

I was going to suggest that this problem is symptomatic of a bad Win95 install before a Win98 update.

Glad you solved it before you went to all that trouble.
