    Win98se server WinXP client problems...

I'm trying to set up a friends wireless network but keep running into a snag. Her laptop has a linksys wireless card and her desktop has a linksys USB wireless AP (WUSB11). The desktop uses a dial-up connection. And we are attempting to allow the laptop to share the internet connection, print ont he HP printer connected to the desktop and also allow both computers to acces files on each other. The problem I run into is I can get the laptop to share the internet but if I try to set up a home network with the WinXP disk I lose the internet sharing. And I still can't access files on each other. Any ideas by other who have doen this? I've heard of it being done the other way around (XP=server 98=client) but not this way. I'm sure it can be done somehow.

    Thanx

    Why use the winxp disk?

If you have setup the 98 box with ICS and its happily sharing the internet then I would suggest that you set a static ip for the xp machine. The 98 machine's ip will be 192,168.0.1 - you need to set the xp machine to 192.168.0.2 (or anything but 1), set the gateway and dns tabs to 192.168.0.1 and check that the xp firewall is disabled.

The xp and 98 machines have to be on the same workgroup, the xp machine will see the 98 machine without a problem, you will have to setup an account on the xp machine for the 98 machine to login to if you want to use the 98 machine to view the xp machine's files.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."
