    setting up motherboard and cpu

    Hi,

I have a A7N8X (asus) motherboard and a AMD 2400XP cpu with 512mb ddr 400mhz memory, please tell what i am suppose to set my motherboard to, the fsb and the multiplier, i thought i have set the fsb to 200mhz but there is no option for that. and the cpu should be set to 133 x 15 right?

    Thanks in advance

After browsing the user manual I don't think that there are any jumpers that control this. I think it is autosensing and that all changes are made in the bios. Does the system post? What exactly is the problem? Cheers.

    Hi Gollo,

Yeah it boots fine but only comes up with 1600xp..

i read in the manual that there is a switch for the fsb from 333/266 (default) and 200 so maybe i should have it on 200?

Ill have to check it out again when im in front of it.

    Thanks

First job decode what an athlon 2400 xp really is .... toddles off to AMD site ..... toddles back .... ah an xp 2400 is 2Ghz (well 1995 if we want to be picky) ... this particular brand of chip runs with a FSB of 266.

So this is ddr based board, so even though the internal frequency of the chip is 266 Mhz the FSB (front side bus) is really running at 133Mhz because we have DDR (double data rate) mem, the multiplier is 15....

Now normally we'd be setting some jumpers now for fsb & multiplier .... as Gollo says there aren't any jumpers to set for this (this mannuals 142 pages long !!).... but there is a bios option for fsb & multiplier (see 4-17 in the mannual) these want setting on auto .... there's also an option for memory speed again this wants to be auto....

Turn it on/off see what post reports ... now if it still comes up as an xp1600 chip then you need an updated bios which you can download from Asus, which ought to fix it, in the meantime you can set the numbers to be what they ought in the bios .... so that's FSB 266, core multiplier 15 & memory speed wants setting appropriately depending on what kind of ddr you have PC1600 that's 200, PC2100 that's 266 PC2700 that's 333... (But check I get confus-ed about stuff ! )....

Then hopefully all will be well ...

200 is most definately not the right setting for your fsb, that's for the original Athlon chips and durons.

Tip: if you've been 'experimenting' with bios values, use the clear cmos jumper to return all the values to safe default, if you are wary of jumpers there's an option to load default values in almost every bios...

Here is the appropriate download page for you ...Asus Bios & drivers for A7N8X

Note : There appears to be more than one revision of this board, so there are two different bioses you can download, , make sure you get the right one !!

This is really bad practice Asus, having more than one bios revision available, means they changed something 'substantial' from the original design, from a users point of view this means the two revisions are NOT the same board at all, if you can wangle it I'd be sending the original back if you haven't got the later revision, really something wants re-wiring on the original boards, but rather than do a re-call they bodge the bios to protect the suspect components, hence you end up with multiple bioses for what is supposed to be the same board.
