Well i was certaintly doing it the hard way!
Just found a much faster solution to the problem, you may already know about:
This error appears to be due to a protection problem in the Windows registry and can occur with a variety of drivers To fix this problem, go to Start, Run... and type REGEDT32.EXE to run the Registry Editor. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\P CI and you will see a number of keys of the form "VEN_xxxx", where xxxx are strings like : "1102&DEV_0004&SUBSYS_00011103&REV_04".Under each of these folders will be another folder with a long numerical name. Open each folder and look for the "DeviceDesc" which matches the hardware you are trying toinstall. HIGHLIGHT THE ENTRY "VEN_xxxx" for that device and select 'SECURITY'-'PERMISSIONS' FROM THE WINDOW TOP MENU and then tick "Allow" for "Full Control". Close REGEDT32 and then continue with the installation of your device.

This isn't working for me. My XP system won't recognize my SanDisk Sansa m230 MP3 player. At first it worked in MTP mode but not MSC mode. In following the SanDisk tech support guy's instructions to fix the problem, it now is broken in MTP mode as well. Same symptoms as above -- the system recognizes the devide, says it needs to install a driver, and then gives the "The data is invalid" error message. In the registry I changed the permissions as instructed above for all 5 keys that refer to USB, but that didn't help. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance....

I am having the same error when attempting to install a new driver for a new monitor. I have tried to the best I could both of the above, but neither have worked. Any Ideas?
Thanks

Welcome to Windrivers stardotstar
I have deleted your other post since it asks the same question.
Please post which operating system you are using and which service pack level and what the monitor make and model is.

Here's the answer folks when the others do not work!!
From: http://winonline.blogspot.com/2005/1...ssions-to.html
Reset the entire registry permissions to defaults
Reset the entire registry permissions to defaults
Here is the detailed instruction on resetting the permissions for the whole registry. This was posted by Ken Zhao of Microsoft.
1. Download and install SubInACL
2. Create a file named reset.cmd in C:\Program Files\Windows Resource
Kits\Tools folder.
3. Edit the reset.cmd file with the following content.
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f
4. Enter into CMD prompt.
5. Enter the following commands one at a time and click Enter.
cdcd "C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"
reset.cmd
6. After a few minutes by processing subinacl, the permission will be reset.

I am adding this to clarify the syntax and a couple other little things for XP, primarilly;
a - it doesn't matter what folder you use, or where it is
b - cd must be typed as cd\
c - creation of the file can be done using cut and paste
1. Download and install SubInACL
2. Create a folder C:\RegPermReset.
3. Paste the following into Notepad and save as file reset.cmd in the folder above.
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f
4. Click Start, Run and enter cmd /k
5. Enter the following commands one at a time and click Enter.
cd\
cd\RegPermReset
reset.cmd
6. After a bit of time processing subinacl, the permissions will be reset.
edit: as a side note, a poster called bcastner posted that 'fix' back in March '05 and went on to explain the function and reasons behind using it;

The Ken Zhao post is here:
http://www.tutorials-win.com/Windows...curity-102793/
Note that the person with the problem had to change ownership of registry areas before the 'fix' worked.

Question about item #2 Create a file. What type of file should this be? None that I create are recognized.
Can't create a folder with symbols in it. "Create a folder C:\RegPermReset"?

Got it to work but it did nothing to correct my problem. Everything is the same as before? Any other thoughts? The report at the end does show several items failed.
