USB devices causing blue screens
Nit sure how to troubleshoot this one. I have a Dell Optiplex GX240. I have tried to install 2 different usb devices, one a disk on key, one a flash card reader. When it is in the installing either of these, the pc crashes to a blue screen...page fault error. I am using Windows 2000 SP3.
Specs:
P4 2.6 Ghz
512 Ram
64 MB Geforce2 video
Soundmax Integrated sound
Any ideas?

I reloaded the latest mb drivers just to be on the safe side. This caused even more problems, sound was going too fast. I reloaded the sound card drivers and fixed that. But still the usb bsod comes up.
I flashed the BIOS to the latest A05, still nothing.
I called Dell Tech Support, they said I needed to install the latest W2K service pack. I did, but still no go.
The bsod is:
Stop 0x00000050
Page fault in non paged area
Address 8044f718 base at 80400000
Date stamp 3ec6c002
ntoskrnl.exe
Any other suggestions?

I had the exact problem, with the exact system, trying to install a USB digital camera. I found the easiest way to fix the problem was to install the USB device on my other system. Saved me a bunch of aspirins!
Seriously though, have you updated to the latest USB drivers? Perhaps the device doesn't like being on an older USB.
OR
Perhaps you're too upgraded. Is your USB 2.0 already? Maybe the device can't handle the latest and greatest drivers. I've also seen that happen.
Mind you, I'm just stabbing in the dark cause I haven't even fixed mine yet. If either of those ideas help, please let us know. I may try reinstalling my camera on my Optiplex after all is said and done.

You should test your ram and run a chkdsk on your harddrive as well..
"The Non-Paged area: Parts of the System which are so important that they may never be paged out - the area of RAM used for these is called in 2000 and XP the ‘Non-Paged area’. Because this mainly contains core code of the system, which is not likely to contain serious faults, a Blue Screen referring to ‘Page Fault in Non-Paged area’ probably indicates a serious hardware problem with the RAM modules, or possibly damaged code resulting from a defective Hard disk. It is, though, possible that external utility software (e.g. Norton) may put modules there too, so if such faults arise when you have recently installed or updated something of this sort, try uninstalling it. "

Hmmm...didn't think of ram. I'll have to give that a try.

I will try that but I have a hard time believing it could be RAM, but I could be wrong. I have no other problems whatsoever, machine is extremely stable. But if I try to plug any usb device, it gives me this message. But being that I am not an expert, I will test the ram and hard drive to see what I get. Thanks for the help.

hmmm is norton on this machine in any guise?
Also... this message can be caused by your pagefile.sys corrupt and by bad drivers.
You might try turning off your pagefile in safemode. Reboot to normal mode and then re create it.

If your machine doesn't like any USB devies attached, then I would start looking at the pagefile also.
At least on my machine, I've got a USB scanner, printer, keyboard (with built in hub for the mouse). My system just doesn't like my Kodak camera for some strange reason.
I gave up only because I could just as easily put the camera on my other system. I seriously wish I had the answer for you... but alas, I do not.

Possible solution
I have found that Optiplex GX series computer have a problem with just about any device that is a USB storage device (ie Harddrives, card Readers, dig. cameras, cd-rws) If you upgraded the inf utility from www.intel.com it may solve your issue. I am the Network admin of a highschool and we have a few hundred GX260's that had this problem with digital cameras and when that was updated it seemed to work. The chipset utility driver can be found here: http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/inf/

I had a problem once with usb devices and BSOD on computers I had the Norton Ghost client ver. 6.5 installed on. I upgraded to ver. 7.5 and that fixed it.

I wanted to make sure I responded to let all know that this was the fix. Upgrading the chipset software did the trick for sure. Thanks a million
