Gateway Profile

I'm working on an older Gateway Profile AMD 400 w/ Windows 98 and can't get the sound drivers to install. This machine came in all messed up , DNS errors , Explorer errors , suspected virus presence , and general disaster , AOL 8 had been there and removed as well. However , it did have sound !After a format and clean install ,it will not accept Gateways sound drivers ! I searched them out by the unit serial # and by model , so I am assuming they are the right ones , and I downloaded them several times , they do not seem to be corrupt........any suggestions ?? Is it possible the sound card was dying and was the cause of some of the errors ?Other than having no sound it now runs very well.

I don't think so , this is a Profile remember , I believe the sound is on the board, not a conventional PC card. I believe Gateway recommends sending these in for any repair , at least on the newer ones, so I haven't taken it apart.

Try the windows 95 drivers rather than the 98/ME - sometimes win98 doesn't like the wdm drivers but will take the vxd version very happily.

Do you know what motherboard it is?

Thanks NooNoo , I would try that , but the customer took it home as is , they just use it at camp for email and really don't care about sound..............wish it was still here though , I'd like to try that.
