Phone rings:
"Information Systems, Richard here. How may I help you today?"
"I can't get my monitor to come out of standby mode."
"Have you tried wiggling the mouse or hitting a key on the keyboard?"
"Yeah, doesn't do anything."
"When's the last time you rebooted the system?"
"I got your email to shut down last night, so I did." (That message was two weeks old!)
"Okay, I'll be right over."
Get to the user's desk, move the accumulated debris out from in front of the PC ... the power light is off. Push the power button and the PC boots up as expected.
"Gee, thanks. You won't tell anyone what I did, will you?"
"Nope, I'd never do anything like that."![]()
P.S. Yeah, I was pretty sure that was what I'd find and I probably could have just had him check it over the phone but I do love making managers feel silly in person. The look on their face is usually well worth the walk.![]()
