OK Lana, welcome to Windrivers....

Lets start at the beginning

What pc do you have? If you dont know, then go to www.belarc.com and download and run the free personal audit, post the results here (please remove the licence number listing from the post!)

Often plug and play is reliant on the bios. Moving to XP may mean that you will have to flash the bios to make it compliant. Did you run the compatibility check before putting xp on?

Did you upgrade from ME or did you do a clean install?

We will start with that and will help you through more depending on the answers you give.

OK.... Did you check with compaq that the machine was xp ready or if you had to do anything?

Can I ask why you wanted to upgrade to xp?

Here is the XP page for your computer

Thank you so much for taking time to help me at times I have a bit of trouble with comprehending things because of being in a coma for three months so please don't get to frustrated with me ok anyway no I didn't tell compaq anything I don't like talking to them they were way to rude and I didn't know I needed to I just took out the 20 g hard drive and put in a brand new 40 g one that had no operating system at all so I really didn't think it would matter which program I put on it

second question

hi sorry I didn't see th other question I only wanted to up grade because my friend Mike said it was a better easier system and I was always making mistakes with me of course the fact that one of my friends deleted the pci card and primary ide controller had something to do with that I had to call a computer guy to come fix that i had no clue on how to fix it then I did something and messed it up again and the quick restore disc was broken so I figured that it would be good to just buy a new harddrive annd use xp

Right ok, we need to start at the beginning of troubleshooting.

First of all, please go to device manager and list any devices that have a ! in a yellow circle next to them. Click on the device and click properties. Tell us what windows says the problem is, there will be a code and a message in the lower half of the window.

To get to device manager, right click my computer, select properties, click on the 3rd tab - hardware, click the middle button device manager.
