No sound after WIN98 install

After I installed windows 98 I can't get sound from any video clips from the internet. What should I do?

try opening your internet browser and click on tools> internet options> advanced. drop down to multimedia and check box for play sounds for web pages. also do you have real player or windows media player installed. you need a player to play video sounds and video clips.

This still didn't solve the problem. Do you have any other suggestions?

Did you install your sound card drivers? Do you hear sounds from within Windows?

good point Doc. Are your speakers plugged into the right jack in the sound card?
volume control turned up? might sound silly, but happens. Also is your sound card listed under "other devices" in device manager. If this is a new install sometimes that happens. You might also go into safe mode, press f8 when booting, and look under device manager. See if the card is listed correctly or multiple times. Just some things to check.

I didn't install the sound card drivers. I can only find one under device manager and it is called MPU-401 compatible. I don't hear sounds from within windows.

I am not sure about the sound card. I have a speaker wire plugged in from the wall outlet to my right speaker, and then a wire connecting the right speaker to the left. I only see MPU-410 compatible under sounds in device manager. I don't find a 'other devices' list.

you still don't have sound card drivers installed. MPU-401 is for midi devices.You could first have windows do a seach for new hardware. If it finds your card have drivers ready. If not remove mpu from device manager and let windows find it again on restart. Have your drivers ready. It should pick up your gameport also. you know you did it right when you have the little speaker showing next to your clock.

Is this a branded machine such as a compaq or hp or emachine? If so, please tell us the make and model number.

If you don't know or its not a branded machine, go to www.belarc.com and download the free personal audit, run the report and post the results here. It will also put up all your licence numbers, please remove those from the post.

When we have that information we can start on the serious help and get your sound sorted out.

It'll be 'long' but yopu might as well post it all (better too much, than too little ) .... don't forget to edit any serial numbers out !!!!

(this is 'still' the same beast that's refered to on 'other threads', the one with a fresh install of 98 that now won't 'find' all your bits properly ? What we need to know for all this is just what's in your computer, then we can tell you what 'extra' info windows needs to fix it up)

OK Its a pc chips... Hsing Tech Enterprise Co is the holding company for these boards. There is not quite enough information here to make an absolute identification, but I am willing to bet that this is what you need if the sound is onboard. here is the installation instructions

Not all the boards of this type came with onboard sound, so it might require you to take the lid off and look to see if there is a proper sound card there or not.


In order to make a better guess I will need the system model that you didn't post as well as how many pci and isa slots belarc detected.
