NO Sound

ey Gang,

This evening I noticed that I am not getting any sound on my machine. The only changes I've made are switching my AV from Command to AVG and Uninstalling Microsoft Publisher.

When I try to play a WAV file I get an error message from Microsoft Media Player saying "Cannot Play Back Audio Stream. No Audio Hardware is available or hardware is not responding"

under Details I get:

There is no sound card
Error ID = 0x80040256, Remedy ID = 0x00000000

However I do have a sound card. It is AC97. Drivers are SiS 7018. There are no checks Device Manager, Sound Video & Games Controller.

I have removed and reinstalled the sound drivers from the original disk. No Luck.

K7SEM mobotherboard, Win98SE.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Orangeman

Okay, Here's an update.

While I cannot play any wav devices. I just tried a game from Rage Studios called Incoming. It is one of the few games I have that I can use through the headphones in my CDROM jack. The other plug to my headphones is on the side of my speakers.

When I loaded Incoming right now it played both through the speakers and through the headphones. However no other audio devices played.

I am still getting the error messages when I try to play a wav file. Also, when I go into Multi-Media devices of Win98, all devices are grayed out in the Audio section.

Any suggestions?

Chipset patches ? my Orange friend ....

The absence of anything in the mulmedia section says that the onboard isn't correctly 'found' .. despite what device manager seems to think, as you no doubt know by now AC97 'onboards' are probably the worst thing to get installed correctly.

Why do you think the board has SIS 7018 ...? That describes a particular onboard sound chipset configuration that as far as I can see isn't applicable ... Here are all the drivers for your board, try all those & see if that straightens this out.

Well Thanks Confus_ed,

You're not such an evil tyrant after all...? (eh, eh)

Anyway after a few hours of messing with this thing I finally got the sound back on. I wouldn't have done it without your suggestion, Thanks

Anyway, just one more problem. During this entire process and for some unknown reason, my CDRW door won't open. It sounds like it wants to and the light goes on, but it just won't open. The CDROM works fine but not the CDRW. Is that just a question of disconnecting the power supply and plugging it in again, or do I have to use the 'emergency button' which consists of inserting a paper clip through the opening of the door housing.

Which is better? Or something else...

Thanks,
Orangema

Now you know that ... ... its all lies put around by folks who don't understand sarcasm, you on the other hand are now fully trained

If the cdr won't open unplug it (to be extra safe) & use a paper clip to push it open a bit then pull it gently to its full extent, re-test empty !

Is there a CDR in the drive?
I just got a call from a church where I do their networking.
"If you recall I told you this before", says she.
Says me: "No, if you recall I told you how to do this already: My Computer/right click CDRW dirve and choose 'eject'"
Her: "Oh yeah....but why does it do that?"
Me: "I will come in next week and reteach you how to record".

...hmmm, that wouldn't be my assistant - Orangegirl by any chance???? Seems like I might have met her some place...

Anyway, I wonder why I keep coming back to the place where I get picked on so often. Is it because I believe secretly they really Do love me and are just afraid to say so or is it because they just plain like to pick on me. Me thinks the latter but I'll say, just to be on the safe side the former.. \

At any rate I think part of the problem is that I'm so damned pickable....

Wait stop, am I confus-ing you...? : :butt:

Of course it's love:
Pumkin headed people are just sooo cute, you can't resist!
So, what solved the problem?
Is this your way of saying you forgot about the eject thing: blame it on Orangegirl?

Your just mad because you forgot all about eject, too.
You would have had him doing all this:
[QUOTEIf the cdr won't open unplug it (to be extra safe) & use a paper clip to push it open a bit then pull it gently to its full extent, re-test empty ! ][/quote]

Arrow Why I'm replying to this paranoid behaviour is currently beyond me ...

[sigh] ... you really do have 'can only see the world from my standpoint syndrome' don't you TripleR ?!?

I ain't 'mad' at all .... if there's a CD stuck in the drive no amount of 'ejecting', whichever method, is gonna help any is it ? A paperclip will though ...
