ms-dos compatibility when disk is not inserted
My A drive in System Performance shows up with a MS-DOS compatibility mode file issue only when a 3 1/2 floppy is not inserted and in My Computer as a Local Disk when a floppy is not inserted. Every time I open My Computer, the A drive rattles like hell. WIN98 thinks its a HDD. Any ideas?
I've checked:
1. NOIDE is not is the Registry
2. No boot virus
3. No yellow exclamation marks in System Device Manager.

Try deleting the floppy drive (in Device Manager) and restarting Windows, letting Windows reinstall the floppy driver...
