British Railway System
For all the Brits out there.
Where do you go on-line these days to check out train times / fares in Britain? What happened to good old British Rail? A friend who is travelling over there today asked me to check some train times for him and I can't seem to find a centralised point to get information. I believe they have split all the railways up now into different companies but I have no idea who would cover the Paddington to Highbridge service? Anyone help? TIA, emr |

Well actually where I live we don't have trains! My nearest station is 50 miles away so I don't really know much about it after privatisation. I had thought that Virgin trains came down to the south west so it may be worth checking that out too. Good luck!

France may be crap at a lot of things (wars for instance ) but they have their rail system running pretty good. I just came up from Lyon to Paris this morning in 2 hours (600 kms / 350 miles) for less than £ 80.emr |

The last time I took a train was about 4 years ago. From Crewe to Exeter. It was delayed for 2 hours, then broke down. Had to change at Birmingham where it was delayed for a further hour. Eventually got back 4.5 hours late. I spent 5 years living in Tokyo where you can just about set your watch by the arrival times of trains. Now I live in a rural area where trains just ain't!

Here's how! Go to google.co.uk, (not .com), type into the search box train time tables, then select results from the UK only. The first page of 10 will be more than enough. My favorite is this one, once you've set the journey details you get ticketing options, and it covers the whole network too. Unfortunately it won't make the trains turn up on time Good luck.

I had my first train ride last week from Montreal to Toronto (4 hour ride, first class, for a 540Km ride).
It was nice, relaxed, and the wireless Internet option during the express rides seems like an excellent idea. And there were no pirates.

Two years ago while I was in London, I thought the railway to be nice. I had no problem getting to London from Gatwick and then to Bath. Nice comfortable cars. The station was a bit confusing, though.
My only gripe is with the mens room... You people pee on walls?!? Ever heard of urinals?!?
