oh my I can't "hear"

I am having a problem with my HP 751N running xp pro. For some reason i can not hear sound. When ever I try to play media player files I get this error 0x80040256.

any ideas what is wrong?

...you should try updating the sound card drivers. Do you have a Yamaha sound card?

Open up the control panel. If it isn't already in classice view, click the option in the top left of the Control Panel window. When you see the icon labled System, double click on it. This opens the system properties window. Click on the hardware tab at the top. Now click the device manager button. You should now see a list of all of the devices on your computer. Next to the item labeled 'Sound, video and game controllers' you'll see a little + sign. Click on it once. Type out a list of everything in the sub-list so we can see it.

Legacy Video Capture Device
Media Control Device
MPV-401 Comp. Dev
Standard Game Port
Video Codecs

You need to reinstall your sound driver this is the hp instructions on how to find your drivers.
