Can't connect machines on a network

I have two PC's running WInXP Pro. One is hard wired to a wireless router, the ohter is a laptop running wireless.

Nothing I do seems to allow me to get these to machines to see eachother. All I need is for the wireless one to be able to print to the ohter PC's printer.

THey are both on the same named workgroup
I have File and Print share enabled
Each PC has a unique name
I ran the network wizard. NOt sure what options to pick with connecting through a router though.

    I'm stumpped. Please help.

What os are you running? can you ping the other system? If so try connecting to \\ip.of.other.system and see if you can browse then. If so then all's you need to do to setup the printer is map the printer from \\ip.of.other.system\printer and you should be in business. Now for convenience in the future we can dig a little deeper and get it to resolve the name of the other system but for now....

Yea, each PC can get to the router and on line.

I tried creating a user name for each other on each PC. So both PC's have the same user name. SOmeone else on this board told me that, even though it makes no sense to me.

One time I got to the point where I could see the other PC, but I had not access to it, even though file and printer sharing is enabled.

Everyone else is not even close to helping you fix that problem. Your problem lies in the fact that you have a router with a firewall. Windows XP has a built in firewall. You can't be behind 2 firewalls. That's why you can connect to the internet and not the other systems. You need to shut off the firewall in XP. Go to MY Network Places. View Network Connections. Look for your LAN Connecton. Open it then go to Properties. Go to the Advance Tab. Turn off the firewall. Reboot your system. Then repeat this on all of the others on the network. I also recommend that your router has the latest firmware installed. Any more questions you can email me at [email protected]

Both firewalls are off but they can't connect to eachohter. How can I unblock them in the router itself? Maybe if I connect to them by there enternal IP address? Like Mine is 198.162.0.2 and the other is 198.162.0.3 etc...

First make sure the computers are in the same workgroup. In the TCP/IP properties for the LAN adapters go to "advanced" and under the Wins tab enable netbios over TCP/IP. Reboot.
The following part is not something "standard". Some might protest. But it has worked for me in instances where the typical way of adding a network printer has failed.
Install the printer drivers on each machine as if they had local printers (prevents some issues with poorly written drivers).
On the "server" share the printer. On the client add a new printer port as local port, for the port name type "\\server_name\printer_name". For the printer that you have installed change the port on which it is printing from USB[..] or LPT1 to this new port. Print a test page, it should work.
As a better choice you might want to consider using a stand-alone print server (USB or parallel, around $50) and you won't have to keep a computer on in order to print.
Protected by Glock. Don't mess with me!

XP uses more security, as well as creating a user for the other machine you must set a password of at least one character.
Using XP pro go to windows explorer and tools folder options view tab shut off use simople file sharing.
Then on the share add the user to the permissions on the share.
Search by IP and when found double click when it asks for user and password enter the user name created and the password sharing should then work.
I would also look to make sure file and print sharing is enabled sometimes the sharing gets disabled when connecting to the Internet.
