welcome to windrivers paul ,,the machine may be to old to accept a drive of that size ,
however , there may be other compac techs floating around with more acurate info.
there are 3 ways i can see of doing this
1: bios update from compac (hp) http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/
2: using the h/disk (not h/hisk) mfg h/disk instilation tools , usually available from there website,
3 using a "promise" type IDE card ,,,although this might sound an expensive way (maybe not thru Ebay) ,,,your board will not be very fast ,,and might not support UDMA 1/2/3/4 etc ,,,whereas a controller card will run at a greater speed than the on-board ,
good luck

The setup information on these old desk pros does not reside in a CMOS chip on the MotherBoard.
It's kept on a non dos partition on the Hard Drive. So you also need to re create this partition on the new hard drive. You can download a utility from compaqs website that will make boot disks to do this.
Its called the "system configuration utility"
I'm guessing this is the right model.

I had a couple of pallets of these a couple of years ago. I never tried to put a large drive in one though.

Actually the leading cause of death for Quantum drives is the PCB. The chip that is just above the power connector can be fried very easily. I see it happen all the time.

Type of Deskpro?
I have a Compaq Deskpro, and when visiting the HP site to download drivers, it ask what type of series I have. I don't know since there is not other information on the computer. I bought this thing from a friend who needed some money and he didn't have any other information booklets or anything, he said that he had thrown them away long ago, since this thing is about 5 years old. The only thing it shows is has a label for the Microsoft software edition and that it has the Intel Inside Celeron. How do I go about find the seriers version so that I get the right drivers?

Welcome to windrivers tinkertron. On the back of the computer, where all the wires connect, there will be a label with the model # and serial #.

I see nothing back there other then a sticker with a serial number, that matches the serial number on the top of the computer, No model number. Any other ideas?
