wan miniport ATW network adapters

I am trying to upgrade to xp pro from me. My network adapter is not compatible with xp pro. Do I need this impaticular adapter to upgrade? Can I just delete it or will this interfere with connecting to the internet? My HSP56 micromodem is not compatible either. What should my next steps be to upgrade?

What have you just done ? Run the xp upgrade advisor on the install cd ? & it says your modem & this wan miniport driver can't work ?

Most likely the wan is part of something dependant on the modem unless you connect seperately via a lan as well as with a modem ?

SO that means you can either try your upgrade & hope that xp identifies the modem ok to give you internet (very often xp can get modems working 'ok' that the update advisor says won't) - or you can try & identify the modem exactly, check the manufacturers site for an xp compatible driver & if there isn't one you could always buy a new modem from about $15 - they are fairly easy to fit ..

I went to my pc's manufacturer's site and they don't even have an updated version of the modem I have.

The xp driver for your modem is located here. Your should uninstall the current driver first. BTW, me to xp as an "upgrade" is not a recommended install path. A format and clean install should give you much better results.

Err you just gave him a 'generic' modem driver - xp probably has one as 'good' as this

(conexant provide 'reference' drivers they don't actually make the modems but the chipsets that go in 'em !) ... if he's looked up the exact modem & concluded there's no driver for it 'exactly' I'm inclined to believe him...

Not to say this won't work ! but I reckon windows own generic driver might be just as good ... you can try either easy enough, & then if neither of them work - resort to a 'new one' (with some xp drivers !).

The advice on clean install over upgrade being 'better' is 'indisputable' though

I would agree, however, the hsp56 micro modem seems to be made by pctel. They don't have driver support that I could find, they just direct you to conexant. The link is from conexant's pctel support page.

By way of an "uninstall", no, but its not likely you could do this successfully if you installed it as an upgrade. If you did the clean install and still had the me disk, you could always go back that way.

The main benefit to choosing an upgrade over a clean install is that you don't have to reinstall all your programs. However, certain upgrades (nt4 or w2k to xp) tend to work better than others (98 or me to xp). You could certainly try it, and if you had problems then do the clean install.

Now, my computer came partitioned. How will this affect my intall of xp?

So important you asked twice !

I dunno wheter xp setup lets you repartition if there's any file system there (I think not, but I'm not 100% sure). If you want the whole disk available I suggest you make yourself a boot disk & use FDISK to remove all the partitions, to be sure ... (its quite 'tricky' resizing any boot partition under w2k/xp so make sure your initial partition is at least 10 gig or you are gonna be wanting to resize it pretty quick

& be back asking 'hard' questions
