Hi
Have just upgraded my TP 600 from ME to XP, and then updated all the appropriate drivers/firmware for the OS from the IBM site. For some reason, the audio won't start (it worked fine under ME), but if you uninstall the drivers and then search for new hardware, it reinstalls itself fine and works, but only until you shut down and restart, at which point it won't start again. Anyone know why/how to fix this? Regards Martin |

Hi MartinS and Welcome to Windrivers.
Did you get the drivers from the TP600 list or did you specifically put in your seven digit model number? When you say not start, do you mean you have a ! in the device manager? Or is there an event in the event viewer about this? Did you install these drivers logged in as Administrator? Have you tried logging in as Administrator and then uninstalling the drivers and then reinstalling them?

Depends MartinS, to make sure type in Administrator as the user and use the Administrator password (often set to blank on pre installs) Exactly what message goes with the ! in the properties sheet for the sound device, and exactly which sound device?

I booted into BIOS (or IBM's version of) and Initialised the system, which resulted in the sound card working...but only until I re-booted! Thanks for the help guys - I really hope I can get this sorted. Regards Martin [EDIT] http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/drivers/86/86338.htm Will take it home and try it out tonight. Should i be convinced that this will sort it? [/EDIT] Last edited by MartinS; March 9th, 2004 at 03:58 AM. |

Thanks for that - have not seen a USB sound card - is it external? I only have 1 USB port and link to broadband via it - I guess I could buy a mini USB hub, but am trying to keep the slim, light PC just that - slim and light! Appreciate your thoughts though. Regards Martin |

Code 10 means it ran out of addresses that it can use.
Then way around this is to Go into safe mode and uninstall the sound and anything to do with sound then turn off in the bios setup anything you don't use, such as serial ports, irda, etc and then try a reinstall of the sound card. If that doesn't work, turn off more stuff - even stuff you use until you get the sound going, then add each thing you need back one at a time. You should also check for any bios/firmware updates for the laptop that you may have missed installing earlier... especially those that deal with power management and/or acpi.

Hi All
Had a go at disabling some of the unused systems (parallel, internal modem, games/midi ports) by using 'Thinkpad Configuration', but whilst flicking through the user manual, it states that the maximum RAM for the 600 is 160MB (32MB base + 2 x 64MB DIMM options) - I'm running 192MB (1 x 64MB + 1 x 128MB - where's my base 32MB?) - doh! Do you think the extra installed memory is something which would cause the problems with finding addresses - would it be worth removing the 64MB and see what happens? Just a thought.... Martin |

Worth a shot yes, overloaded ram sockets can do strange things. It's always best to attack these problems with a minimum amount of hardware and all known bases covered.

WooHoo - It Works!
I decided to install the updated drivers I found and it's all working perfectly, even with the extra memory and everyting enabled!
Very strange - but I'm a happy bunny, so while it's working i'm just going to leave it alone! Thanks all for your help I'll be back if I decide that the COM1 is an issue, but until then.... Regards Martin |

Welcome to Windrivers Olli
Which ibm upgrades did you install? This information may be very useful to others.
