    Question DVD blank recognition

I have a new lite combo drive. After installing it I began creating mini movies and they were copying ok, although I think the disk quality wasn't the best. Now I cannot copy anything. The drive that should copy cds and dvds does not recognise any type of blank disk? I do not know why. I can still run cds and dvds through it. As well as the burner I also have a standard cd drive. Can anyone help?

    Welcome to WD.
Have you used different name brand CD/DVD's? In other words, is this a bad batch? If not bad media, then we may have to adjust DMA settings for the drive itself or update the "firmware". So, exact model of combo drive and OS version will help. Also, the burning software and version.

    Question Can you still help?

I have tried different brands of media (e.g. data bank, record, tdk). I have a DVD+- R/RW GO-W0404A. I am using 'Power Producer 2' to copy to DVD's and also through 'My computer' with windows XP?

So think back, what did you do between the time you could burn and noticing you couldn't

    Windows updates?
    Virus removal?
    Updated or loaded other software?

    Question programs/software

I deleted all files from my kazaar directory and reinstalled the new version of this program (V2.6). I also have installed a new printer/scanner/copier (X6170 lexmark). New software was installed to operate this external device.

So has this improved anything? What about burning files as data files with something like Nero?

I didn't install these programs to try and fix dvd burner. I was just explaining what I've done with my computer between time I realised it worked to when it wasn't working (answering your question).

Computer doesn't recognise any blank cd/dvd's.

Chill dude .. we can see - sometimes we have to play twenty questions so we get the facts straight, sometimes it all seems a bit like we doubt your 'capability' - I can assure you no slight intended

Now bearing in mind our 'we ask stupid questions to be sure attitude' , can you confirm explicitly about windows update visits, or the windows update service (which may be on without you knowing, & Billy Boy's servers are tinkering with your setup, without you being aware) - so is it on ?

Oh & I need to give you 'sh!t' about using Kazza .. all these file 'sharing' apps are all very nice & all for 'borrowing' stuff, but they aren't good for 'net nasties', I doubt that is the issue here, but it could be, so do you know about such products as adaware, spybot or even HijackThis ? (they are all 'net nasty finders' - malware removers) - even if its not related here, you might want to know about them anyway for 'safety' reasons..

Please also answer about any virus removal ..

(& please don't take any of this 'help offered' in the 'wrong' way )

    Question Windows update?

I shall remove Kaaza as I want to do anything right... as I do believe you will be able to help me down the track.

I dont think windows update is working? Are you saying it should be on or not? (What do you mean by 'billy boys servers?)

I'll have to check about virus software, but I go from my home computer to work computer and currently I am at work.

I have not have any viruses that have need removal.

I do appreciate your help greatly!

    Lightbulb Nero.

I do have nero (a full version). Let me try running a data cd through nero tonight. I'll give you feedback on what it tells me.

'Billy Boy' being Bill Gates, richest man in the world & co-founder of Microsoft - & object of much derision & name calling by techs & nerds alike ! - just me trying to be funny

So this ties in now you see with Noo's 'what has happened since it did work' line of thought, which is the right approach, if the service is on , then Microsoft have nicely been updating your machine, without you realising, so things can change without you knowing, if its off you have to do updates manually & therefore you tend to see what they are 'up to' by their descriptions & know whats changed ..

Generally on is best, despite not 'knowing/appreciating', as at least you are up to date, however we seem to have a rash here of issues maybe to do with the DRM patch (digital rights management) I've had quite a few in my own business too lately, also Windows update can change drivers too, which again might be relevant.

Can I confirm also that you've run some malware remover/checker ?

& I appreciate questions etc overlap (but try & answer them all if you can, or counter with a question if you need clarification) & don't take my 'chill' comments too harshly, I just thought you seemed a bit 'frazzled'

    Question Malware remover?

What do you mean by malware remover?

Malware is short for Malicious Software, it strictly covers all 'bad' stuff, so viuses, worms, trojans, broswer 'helper' objects (which might help someone else & not you!), script type macros, host file redirects, malicious active x controls - all sorts of stuff which might be meant to help a program work, but can also be used to harvest personal & usage data from your machine or to introduce more 'evil' stuff such as other malware..

Examples of malware removers are such things as 'adaware', 'spybot', 'cwshredder' & my favourite 'HijackThis' (not for a novice!) .. there are many others too (try a search in this forum for details, its been covered 'muchly' here already )

    Edit:

We are getting caught up in lots of stuff here, which is 'most likely' nothing to do with your problem !

I think we've all learn't 'the hardway' here, that before we can tackle these 'it shouldn't do that' type questions that we need to make sure it both virus & malware free, before we start .

All 'we' want is to know that you've run an uptodate AV proggie or check & some malware remover or other, to eliminate those as 'possibles', if you are happy you've done that & can say YES we can start with some possible fixes ! -Finally ..
