Unhappy Comp. wont play (recognize) any sound (files)

    Hello,

I recently am experiencing a sound dilemma. My computer has long been working quirk free. I disconnected and the reconnected in a new location. When I reconnected the computer, I soon found that NO sounds worked:

I tried to access my music files: File types not recognized

I tried to play the windows theme sounds: "file may be damaged or may use an unrecognized compression format..."

I tried to test my sound device hardware: Sound Hardware cannot play sounds

I tried Control Panel>Sound & Audio Devices> Sound> Device Playback> Advanced: error- DirectSound settings not available

I tried to play movies (avi) and receive notice that the audio for the movie is missing or something, and am advised to close out or play without audio.

I have been through the device manager, and the sound card Creative AudioPCI (ES1371,ES1373) (WDM) is enabled and "working properly". I haven't the slightest as to what is wrong.

I have never had a problem to date, and can't seem to figure where it exists now. I even went to services.msc and checked windows audio services... it's fine.

Will you assist me in my quest? MUSIC IS MY LIFE!

    SPECS:

    Unit: OEM Prebuilt
    Intel Celeron CPU 1.7 GHz

    O/S: MS Windows XP

    Mother Board: I don't know

Sound Card: Creative AudioPCI (ES1371,ES1373) (WDM)

Hey Papi: welcome to Wd, and don't cry, alright? We'll get to the bottom of this.
First off, go back to Device Manager and remove your sound device. Then, go to Add/Remove Programs and remove anything related to your sound card.
Then reboot and let XP redetect everthing. Then, let us know if it works.

    Unhappy

Thank you for the reassuring words.

I would like to do this; however, I don't have my original cd's in order to reinstall windows xp and it's components or drivers. Won't I lose functionality of my sound card without that (as if it were working at the moment anyway)?
