    Windows XP internet connections

I recently had Windows XP installed on my wife's computer. I then installed Norton SystemWorks 2004 which has Norton's Antifivrus. I also installed Zone Alarm free edition. I have no problem getting on the internet via my cable modem connected through a router through a network hub. However I now have a problem staying on the interenet. Whenever I let the computer sit for a period of time I find myself off the internet and have to reboot to get back on. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

    Welcome to Windrivers crolfs

First thing to check is device manager. Right click my computer, properties, 3rd tab- hardware, device manager button.

Find the entry for the network card and right click properties on it. Now check that XP is NOT allowed to power it down when it thinks the network is idle.

This sounds familiar...I don't know why an OS install might change your router settings, but it seems to have been the case in a couple machines here.

After you check NooNoo's advice, it might be worth it to recheck your router's "idle timout" setting, too, and make sure it hasn't been set to a default time rather than "0."

Also, check your ZoneAlarm. It has a feature on it where it locks the internet out after a certain idle time. I forget the exact name of the feature but it is something like Automatic Lock. Make sure that it is disabled or set it to a longer time. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the tip. XP was allowing it to power down when idle. I think this will fix the problem.
