Win98(1st edition) doesn't recognise CDRom

Help!,

The CDRom drive (Q: drive) has disappeared on my computer. The message I receive is that it has been removed or is inaccessible.

My computer is an old Packard Bell Club Series 3660 and the OS is Windows 98 1st edition.

I looked at a previous thread on WinDrivers and it said to possibly look at the Windows registry and install an older version - how do you do this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

First thing you should do is reboot your computer and see if the BIOS detects the cd-rom when you boot. If the BIOS isn't seeing the drive there's not much you can do other than replace it.

My guess is if the computer is old enough to have original win98, chances are very good the drive just pooped out on ya.

I can't remember if the old Packard Bells had splashscreens which hid the BIOS or not, but if yours does you can try hitting the ESCAPE key to get rid of the splashscreen so you can see the BIOS text.

Indeed Razza, check the Bios and see if the CD is detected. Does it even light up anymore? In other words: when you turn on the pc, does the CD drive light up?
It IS really old. And, I would like to know what thread you are referring to that you read here. There is NOTHING you can do in the registry which will make a dead CD drive work again...so more info, please: does it light up? Is there still electricity getting to the drive that it recognises?
Can you access the Bios? Can you change the boot order and try a bootable CD?
