Incoming phone call causes computer to lock up
I have a Creative Labs Conexant 56k modem on an MSI K7T Pro2 board and every time the phone rings in the house, the computer locks up. I am sure it is related to the modem, but just not sure how. I don't think it is trying to answer the phone, unless that is the default done by CL...
Any ideas?

Hi,
It sounds like it's trying to answer...
You might try going to your Extended Modem Settings and add the following string:
S0=0
Where 0 is the number 0 and not the letter O.
This sets the S-register zero to the value of zero. If set to 1, it will try to answer on the first ring, 2 on the second ring and so forth...
Also, most modems come with some sort of Fax Communicator software or some variation thereof. You might look in msconfig/Startup and try disabling any such software upon bootup.
Just a couple of suggestions...
Hope this helps out...Good Luck!

Also, go into modem properties and it will have an option to put a *70 in it to disable call waiting, if you have that feature on your phone line.

This is weird. Even if you have call waiting, then phones in the house should not ring if you are on the phone, on a voice call or otherwise. At least this is the way it is in Canada, may be different where you are.
Do you have two lines in the house? The wiring inside your house may be faulty, but don't call the telephone company since you're usually responsible for all the wiring inside your house.

Hi,
One more suggestion:
You might check your BIOS/Power Management Setup...make sure that you have Disabled the "Resume on Ring" option...it might be hosing things up also.
Let us know which one of these wonderful suggestions helped you out...
Good Luck!

I think its the signal that comes thru to notify you of a call waiting , I have call waiting , and if I don't use the 70# setting to disable it , it will cause my modem to lock up momentarily and sometimes will knock me off line . Anyway , its a quick and easy place to start troubleshooting , however , I still can't understand how the other phones are ringing unless you have two separate lines ?? If that is the case , sounds like some wires are crossed up or touching in one of the junction boxes. Is it possible you have call forwarding from the other phone line to the line you are using the computer on ??

Well, I have verified that ANY incoming call immediately locks up his machine. Tried the S0=0 and that didn't help. He only has one phone line. The lock ups occur when he is OFFLINE and the phone rings.
I have never seen anything like it, so I am fairly confident it is a bad modem. Will report back if a new modem still does it...
Thanks for the suggestions!

Now it looks like his old modem is working. He entered "S0=0" which didn't work...but then he changed it to "S0 = 0" and it seems to work fine now...it no longer locks up when the phone rings.

I have the same problem.
It started right after I got bellsouth voice mail, so I strongly suspect that, but it doesnt happen constantly so I cant be sure.
if you found a fix, let me know, i might just change modems
