Media Audio Contoller problem
I have sorted out most of the problems on a young friend's computer who went crazy uninstalling things she didn't know the importance of...except for this problem.
___________
Her computer has no sound from any source. It is 6 months old and it has worked flawlessly until she screwed with it. This box was custom made from a reputable company.
In Device Manager, listed in Other, is Multimedia Audio Controller, with a yellow ? mark.
At each reboot computer tries to install drivers, but fails saying there aren't any. (she probably deleted these I assume)
I've read many similar threads on this subject on this forum, but am still stumped, hoping someone can help. I don't know if she has a sound card or onboard (and she certainly doesn't know), but per another post I downloaded the aida32 program and it disclosed...
Motherboard ID = 1/20/04 SpringdaleG-6A79AE19C-00
Motherboard Name = ECS 865G-M (deluxe)/PF2
under PCI/PnP Audio Icon...
Intel 82801EB ICH5 - AC ' 97
I would be so grateful if you could help me out with this.
Nancy
edit---she is running XP Home
2nd edit----she discarded all CDs which came with her computer <sigh>

Welcome to windrivers NancyS. The motherboard has the 865G chipset, which has an intel ac'97 controller and an ac'97 codec, in your case cmedia. The drivers for your motherboard are here. The sound (codec) driver you need is the fourth one down.

Hudson,
You are an angel!!...I could not find the appropriate MB on the ECS site. I have downloaded the file you specified, will unzip it, burn to CD, bring it to her house to install. I'm feeling very hopeful now and thank you so much for yor incredibly fast reply. I will post back with my results after my visit to her.
Oh...what would be the best method of installing the driver? I do so appreciate your help!

If it's cmedia, and there is no setup.exe supplied, you need to go into device manager, click on one of the incorrectly installed sound devices, click driver tab, update driver button and then browse to the directory to which you copied the drivers.
Using xp, this means you have to click the advanced button when the wizard starts, and then tell it to include the relevant directory in its search.

NooNoo,
Thank you for your clear and thorough answer to the question I added to my post, I appreciate your knowledge and time. You're great!
HudsonSmith,
Again, thank you. Directing me to the file I need and could not find is a huge help...though I readily admit I wasn't sure exactly which file I needed before your rescue, have not dealt with drivers frequently.
