SATA drive running in PIO mode

Hello everyone,

I am trying for some time to solve my sata problem with no luck.
I have the following configuration:

mo: P4P800 Deluxe
Latest BIOS: 1016
MSI FX5600 video
On Primary Controller: HDD: 40 Gb Seagate PATA hard disk, with Windows 2000 on it;
On Secondary Controller: two CD_Roms;
On the first SATA port: Seagate SATA 80 Gb hard disk;

I am having problems running avi files from the sata disk, video is in slow motion,
no problem running the same file from the other disk.

I checked the speed for both drives with Quick Bench, and I got:
3.2 Mb/s for SATA and 55Mb/s for PATA drive.

Checked in device manager and under the second Primary IDE Channel
Current Transfer Mode is PIO, under Transfer mode : DMA if available.

I have removed the controller but after reboot it founds it again as:
Intel 82801 EB Ultra ATA Storage Controller, one for each drive.
I have updated the Intel Chipset which is supposed to contain SATA support
but no change.

In BIOS I have all drives set to AUTO
Under IDE Configuration I have:

Onboard IDE Operate Mode: [Enhanced Mode]
Enhanced Mode Support on: [SATA]
Configure SATA as RAID: [NO]

I have changed the cable.I also ran Seatools DOS type software, It found no error and the speeds under PIO mode were: 3Mb/s, and in UDMA mode up to 100Mb/s.

did you install the motherboard drivers? For this board it is the Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility V5.02.1003.

Yes, I have. But after the OS installation.
I have checked in the registry for the INF and the right version is there 5.02.1003

My particular SATA 3800013AS drive is not on the HCL Windows list.
Do I need some windows updates?

On my motherboard I have Itel ICH5R chipset which is the same with 82801ER
This should be responsible with handling the SATA Raid controller.
I have id the chpset with Intel's utility and comes up as: I/O Controller 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R).
I have updated the intel infs to the latest from Intel's website but in device manager I have under controllers: Intel 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controller.
I shouldn't have the other one to be able to have the sata working properly?

No I haven't because is installing under WindowsXP only.

Also just a tiny observation, from what I recall when I bought the system one year ago, the BIOS was ver.1005 now I have 1016. But then the third master
which is SATA was seen in BIOS as ATA VI now is seen as ATA V.
Should I downgrade the BIOS back to square one?
I really don't know what to do.

No I haven't because is installing under WindowsXP only.

So why is it shown for for 2k/xp here?

I am not sure why you mentioned this? All chipsets have a combination of chips for the north or southbridges.

You can try that - though sata is faster than ata 6 anyway....it may be just the implementation of the standard.

..The Intel® Application Accelerator as well as the Intel Application Accelerator RAID Edition do not support the ICH5 I/O Controller Hub. The Intel Application Accelerator RAID Edition only supports the RAID controller in ICH5R and will not work with an ICH5 I/O Controller Hub.

If you have an ICH5 I/O Controller Hub, please use the Microsoft* native storage driver built into Windows*. The Microsoft native storage driver supports both Serial ATA and Parallel ATA hard drives.

(its was a glorified high speed IDE driver, now its a glorified RAID sata controller - the reasonings all a bit complicated, but the link explains )

I think here if your bios has the option it wants setting as 'JBOD' (just a bunch of disks/drives) - I've had trouble with this before myself, though as usual my memory is 'iffy' so please forgive me while I flounder !

I took it to mean that if you just run eide then windows native is fine.... if not, you need the iaa.

Very similar problem with a new XP machine. Running in PIO mode with the same chipset.

Hi there,
I had the identical problem that you are experiencing. I also have a P4P800 and a seagate HDD. The problem occured for me when I updated to the latest bios. After trying drivers etc etc, I found that the 4th primary IDE chanel (that the drive was plugged into) was set to disabled. Windows still detected it but ran it in PIO mode. Setting it back to auto fixed the prob.
I see that you have all drives set to auto. But it may pay to recheck, or try setting all to disabled and resetting to auto.
