Repair install hangs
Customers new Gateway. Would not boot. Low virtual memory error on startup. Removed hard drive and scanned on bench machine. Found 4036 virii, trojans, etc. Cleaned/deleted all. Replaced hard drive. No joy. Repair/ install. Hangs at 35 min. Knowledge base says uninstall Anti-virus, remove peripherals, cards, etc. If it's the Norton Anti-virus hanging the repair, how do I remove it? Can not boot in any mode, stuck in install. Drive is ntfs.

If you must keep the original install... then go for a parallel install - then you will be able to access the registry on the original.

Did a parallel install on a separate drive. How do I access the other registry?

Sorry for the bump, but a clean install is out of the question.

The other reg is accessible in the current one. It would be a different "hive" that needs to be edited.
I'll look for something more appropriate to your situation (probably tomorrow, btw...unless the brit contingent helps out here first, hey ed ), but check this for an example and some help :
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=307545
Just for info purposes, what kb article do you refer to?

btw: even with a parallel install, the norton "rnav" tool should do the job well enough, if that is the problem.

And thanks. Since it's a Gateway computer, it would be an OEM install, right?
Edit: Booted using repair console. Using listsvc, disabled all norton services. However, there is one service that is a security service? not sure, the computer is off the bench, will post the name tomorrow, that shows up as incomprhensible characters. A heart, exclamation point, etc. To disable it, I need to be able to type it. Is it a virus in the registry? How do I fix this?

To access the old registry:
Click Start, and then choose Run. The Run window appears.
Type regedt32, and then click OK. The registry editor appears.
Click on the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE window.
Click the Registry menu, and then choose Load Hive. The Load Hive window appears.
Browse to the folder "%systemroot%\system32\config", click System, and then click Open. The Load Hive window prompts you for a Key Name.
Type "test" and then click OK. Test appears as a key.
You now have access to the old registry.
