Samsung TS-H542A problems
Ok. I just purchased a Samsung TS-H542A DVD writer. I have this in an external enclosure, hooked up to my IBM laptop via a USB 2.0 pcmcia card. It came with Nero Express software. Everything works up to the point where it begans the burn, then the thing just hangs. On Nero, the recorder buffer level never goes above zero and the whole program freezes. Also, its seems that once it starts to hang, all activity in the drive stops - there are activity LED's on the enclosure and they stop lighting up once it hangs.
From this point, because the program is frozen, I have to end it via task manager. But then, the computer does not recognize my drive, I cannot do anything else and I have to reboot. Because of this, I cannot post any kind of error log because I cannot do anything.
I have tried installing the lastest firmware from samsung-odd, but I get an error saying that "flash Cmd failed". Incidentally, when this error pops up, the same things happens as described above - no activity on the drive, computer cannot recognize it any longer, computer freezes up.
One last thing. I have 2 IBM laptops, one for work and one at home. This does not work on either one of them. But I have a work collegue with a dell laptop and when we hook it up to his, the writer burns just fine. But we cannot see what is different about his than mine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am running XP, one computer has sp1 and the other sp2.
Thanks and let me know if you need more info,
Curtice

Follow up
I was able to get an error log by stopping the burn, then shutting down the drive. Not good, I know, but I hope this helps anyone who might have an idea as to what I should do. I had to cut some of it out cause it was too long. The portions towards the bottom just repeated about 20 times, so I cut some of that out.

I'm assuming there was software that came with and that you installed it correctly. If I was in that situation I might try a different burning program, such as Alcohol 120% or CloneCD. I believe both offer a free trial. You could also try the demo of the newest version of Nero.
Another option may be completely removing your software and device drivers and starting over again. Good luck!

Welcome to Windrivers caboulto
Starting over s not a bad idea. Have you tried it using XPs built in burning software? A fairly good freeware version called CDBurnerXP Pro can be found here: http://www.cdburnerxp.se/
...btw welcome to the fray Richard1

Try disabling the AutoPlay on that drive in WinXP. If you need directions just ask.

Thanks for the responses
I have tried other burning software and the same thing happens. I also uninstalled and reinstalled everything to no avail. I disabled the autorun also, but it still does not work. (in regedit - let me know if there is a better way to try that). btw, the process status alway goes up to some percentage complete, but the action is always "lead-in" and nothing gets burned at all.

Just a thought, are you sure that burner supports USB 2.0? What shows up for the pcmcia card in Device Manager?
