    Video problem Compaq Presario 5451

I recently donated a Presario 5451 to my best friend's kid. It is bone stock specs (Win98SE, 450 MHz AMD K6.) I am trying to add an ATI Radeon 7000 64 MB PCI video card.

With the card installed into any PCI slots the PC will not even boot, regardless of which video port I have the monitor plugged into.

If I remove the card, it boots fine.

The MB is a Gigabyte GA-5SMM. I have searched and researched and tried recommendations from both Compaq(HP) and Gigabyte's websites to no avail.

I cannot find a jumper setting that would disable onboard video.

I have also looked in CMOS for anything related to video. I may be overlooking something in here, but I am not sure.

I also noticed that the PC will not turn off by pressing and holding the power button with the ATI video card installed.

It will turn off without the card installed by pressing and holding the power button.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. A 5 year old wants to play his Dora the Explorer really, really badly.

Tried your suggestions once more. I had already been there and tried all of the suggestions from ATI and Compaq/HP, but that does not mean I did it right the first time.

I was actually able to get semi Tech help via HP's tech chat program. It was free I was was priveldeged enough to chat with imbeciles, twice.

Was told that ATI 7000 required a minimum power supply of 300 Watts. I have an old HP of similar specs with an ATI 7500 SE 64MB PCI. It took a jumper change to disable onboard video.

ATI's minimum specs state "Q16: What are the system requirement for the RADEON® 7000?

    A16: AGP versions require Intel® Pentium® 4/III/II/Celeron™, AMD® K6/Athlon™/Duron™/Athlon™ XP or compatible with AGP 2.0 Compliant - AGP 2X (3.3V), AGP 4X (1.5V), or AGP2X/4X universal slot
PCI versions require Intel® Pentium® 4/III/II/Celeron™, AMD® K6/Athlon™/Duron™/Athlon™ XP or compatible with PCI universal slot
    128MB of system memory recommended
    Installation software requires CD_ROM drive
    DVD playback requires DVD drive"
