My D drive is not being recognized when I go to My Computer, and it will not read any disks put into the drive. I have gone into the BIOS and it shows up there as Secondary Master [Samsung CD-R/RW Drive]. This is the first problem I've ever had of it not recognizing in the 3 years I've had the computer. I'm running Windows XP on an HP Pavillion 511n. I recently had a new Graphics card (e-geforce4) installed, and have had numerous problems with various things since. First I lost connection to the internet, then I could only boot Windows under Safe Mode. Then my display settings would not allow me to see my Start Menu. Then my D drive was no longer recognized. I have taken the card back out of the computer, and everything but the D drive and the internet are back to normal. I've been reading over other posts on the forum about similar problems, but have not seen anything yet about what to do after BIOS "sees" the D drive. Any help beyond this is much appreciated!

You could try to remove the CDRom drivers from the Device Manager and reinstall them.
To get there right click on MyComputer -> Click properties -> Click on the hardware tab -> Then click on "Device Manager." Be careful in the "Device Manager" if you are not familiar with this area you can cause other hardware problems. Let us know how you make out. |

I uninstalled the driver through the Device Manager and rebooted my computer. When it started up again, my icon at the bottom popped up saying New Hardware found for my CD-R/RW, but its still not showing up on My Computer, and under the Device Manager it has an exclamation point next to it, and says "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (Code 39).

One last question.. (If you haven't already noticed, I'm slightly technologically challenged, so I hope this isn't another dumb question on my part
) If it tells me in the Device Manager that Windows cannot install the driver for my CD-R/RW because it is either corrupted or missing, if I reinstalled Windows, would it replace the driver as well, allowing it to be installed? I hope I don't sound like a total idiot asking this.

That is by no means a stupid question. You should be able to do a repair install. That should replace all the drivers native to Windows XP.

Code 39
I have the same problem (CD/RW Philips 1610A):
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) I've lost all my virtual drives too. What's happened? Did you reinstall WinXP to solve the problem? |
