Angry detecting drives

Weird this,i am running windows 2000 pro and i have just bought the nec 3500 dvdwriter.I replaced my cd writer with my new dvd writer same settings and it wouldnt detect writer so i removed my dvd rom as well and set new writer to master and its ok.Next i put dvd rom back in as slave and it wont detect it but it shows up in bios.Next iput cd writer ba ck in as slave and it now detects both my new dvd writer and cd writer. How can i get my new dvd writer to work with my dvd rom?Its doing my head in cos they will work separately but not together it seems .Please help and nothing too techy please i am a bitof a numpty when it comes to computers.

Some hardware just wont work together
I have seen this with some creative cdroms and writers.
It may well be that the 2 will not work together
