Samsung TS-H552B Problem
I just installed my new DVD Writer as the slave on my secondary IDE channel.
The setup I have is 2 Maxtor 80Gb hard disks on IDE1 and my Sony DVD-ROM as the master on IDE2. When I first installed it, Windows recognised the drive but in My Computer it was referred to as a CD-ROM drive. I then upgraded to the latest firmware and it is now seen as a DVD-RW drive. Before the firmware upgrade, Nero didnt see the drive as a viable option for recording as the only choice was Image Recorder. Now I have upgraded, it sees it. I tried to simulate writing a DVD to test it and put in a brand new, just opened Philips DVD+RW 4.7Gb disc. Uponcommencing the simulation, Nero ejected this disc and told me to insert a blank disc for the simulation. I tried again with the same kind of disc once again unwrapped 5 seconds before it was inserted. It did not recognise it. I tried inserting it into my DVD-ROM and my computer just sat there trying to read it for 5 minutes but to no avail. I tried putting in a CD which I knew had data on it and the DVD-RW didnt read that either. As far as I can tell, I have done everything the user guide told me to do (I didnt install the MS-DOS drivers that I read caused problems with XP) and it still doesnt do anything. Welcome to Windrivers alig4321
Looks like you got a bad drive if it is not reading or writing. Having said that, the DVDrom drive may be causing a problem. You will note that the nero info tool could get neither the serial number nor the date from the Sony. Try removing the Sony altogether and making the Samsung the master drive. If it works then, add the sony back as secondary slave. If it quits working, then you have a compatibility problem between the two which may be down to the Sony using DMA.

I have exactly the same drive and am getting near enough the same trouble, i think its the firmware, when i first installed the drive it came with TS03 FW, at that time the next upgrade was TS04 which i put on it and all was fine, yesterday i formatted the PC and reinstalled Win98 (yes i still use it!) The drive was fine so i put in a DVD data disc which i put all my backup files on, including the TS04 upgrade. Being silly i installed the FW from the DVD backup disc which was in the drive. This messed up the whole FW Upgrade and from then on the Drive wouldnt open or close! When looking at the drives properties in Device Manager, it said BOOT next to the description of FW. I then went and D/L'ed the latest FW for the drive which is now TS06. Everything looked fine and the drive opened and closed but whatever disc I put in it couldnt read at all, the light would flash a little but you could tell it wasnt properly trying to read the disc! I then reinstalled the TS04 FW thinking Win98 wasnt compatible with TS06 but still the drive doesnt read nothing at all! It was working perfectly until upgrading the FW! Can you Help?

Flashing firmware is always risky. If the drive is responding and if there is a dos version of the flash, unplug the hard drives and flash from the floppy drive only. If the flash is only windows based, run the flash in safe mode.
There is a disclaimer on most firmware upgrades, you toast it, it's your problem. Have you tried reading the data on the drive in dos? Will the dvd boot the win98 cd for you?
