Try installing the Adaptec ASPI drivers from http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/sup...a2.exe&sess=no
Read the instructions on how to launch the setup!!!
Also see if the drive works if you set it as a single drive on your controller, at the end of the cable. The symptoms show unreliable reading of the data. Since the drive is new, being defective is less likely, but still not excluded... Clean the CD's and if you have a cleaning CD use it... Let's start from here.
BTW: there are no other drivers needed, Windows has native support for DVD drives.
Oh, you can also change the settings from DMA to PIO or viceversa and see if it changes anything...

no the computer company says all i can do is a clean install of windows...shoot.........with a cleaning dvd the sound a nd picture just keeps breaking up on the cleaning dvd...i've tried regular cd cleaning cd..nothing helps.

2 drives with same problem using different cables points to the IDE controller on the motherboard. It could also be something screwed in your Windows, but I'm tempted to blame the hardware for some reason. Where do you connect this drive, on the primary or seconday controller? Try to swap the 2 optical drives...

Does the dvd work if connected as secondary master and leave the cd drive off completely?

Are you using 40 wire or 80 wire ide cables for the cd/dvd drives?

If you install it as a slave to the primary hard drive... what then?

What motherboard is this?
