Help!
Cannot get any sound out of my P4 Windows XP computer. I'm having difficulty apparently with not having a sound driver. I have an ATI card with which I have also completed loaded the software, yet when I go to the Device Manager it only shows the yellow ??? question marks by "Other Devices" for "Multimedia Controller". I do see an "ATI Multimedia" folder, and there is a reference to "ATI Multimedia Center" on the "Add/Remove programs" list, but not sure what is missing here? Can anyone shed any light on this for me? PLEASE advise with any thoughts. THANKS!!! Frank Beachem Manassas, VA catrat@erols.com |

Hi Frank, welcome to WinDrivers.
We really do need some more information to be able to help you. If you don't know the full details of what model of card is in the system, I suggest downloading the free Everest program. Let us know what the program reports of your sound setup and your system configuration when you run it. Alternatively if you do know exactly which card it is, let us know, along with what happened at the time your sound ceased working eg is it a new installation of Windows, or a new sound card, etc.

Platypus: Thanks for your response.
I downloaded the Everest program you suggested. Not sure exactly what you are referring to with "Let us know what the program reports of your sound setup and your system configuration when you run it", but will elaborate somewhat with what I see with it. First, it appears I have a All-in-Wonder RADEON 8500 DV Edition (64 MB) Under "Computer Summary", I see the following: Field Value Computer Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Professional OS Service Pack Service Pack 2 Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180 (IE 6.0 SP2) DirectX 4.09.00.0904 (DirectX 9.0c) Computer Name HOME-PBH6YT35ZI User Name Frank Motherboard CPU Type Intel Pentium 4A, 2200 MHz (22 x 100) Motherboard Name Intel Winnipeg D845WN (6 PCI, 1 AGP, 3 DIMM, Audio) Motherboard Chipset Intel Brookdale i845 System Memory 512 MB (SDRAM) BIOS Type AMI (07/30/01) Communication Port Communications Port (COM1) Communication Port Printer Port (LPT1) Display Video Adapter All-in-Wonder RADEON 8500 DV Edition (64 MB) 3D Accelerator ATI Radeon 8500 (R200) Monitor ViewSonic A90 [19" CRT] (NP01333990) Multimedia Audio Adapter Creative SB0090 Audigy Platinum Sound Card Storage IDE Controller Intel(r) 82801BA Bus Master IDE Controller Floppy Drive Floppy disk drive Disk Drive WDC WD1200BB-53CAA0 (111 GB, IDE) Disk Drive WDC WD1200BB-53CAA0 (111 GB, IDE) Optical Drive MITSUMI CR-48X9TE (24x/10x/40x CD-RW) Optical Drive PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-104 (DVD:2x/1x/6x, CD:8x/4x/24x DVD-RW) SMART Hard Disks Status OK Partitions C: (NTFS) 31000 MB (19447 MB free) D: (NTFS) 83462 MB (81420 MB free) E: (NTFS) 114470 MB (94423 MB free) Input Keyboard Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard Mouse Microsoft PS/2 Mouse Network Network Adapter Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC Network Adapter WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface (66.44.103.119) Modem Motorola SM56 Voice Modem Peripherals Printer Canon MultiPASS F30 Printer Printer WinFax (Photo Quality) Printer WinFax USB1 Controller Intel 82801BA(M) ICH2X/M - USB Controller 1 [C-0] USB1 Controller Intel 82801BA(M) ICH2X/M - USB Controller 2 [C-0] USB Device Canon MultiPASS F30 USB Device Generic USB Hub USB Device Microsoft Integrated USB Hub Let me know if this does or doesn't help, or if there is anything else I can tell you to provide more clues. The ATI is your video card. This is your audio: Creative SB0090 Audigy Platinum Sound Card. Driver here: http://us.creative.com/support/downl...ame=Windows+XP

Thanks very much. I downloaded the driver you suggested (per link below) into the ATI folder in "Programs" and restarted the computer. HOWEVER... I still don't have any sound. I still see the ??? question marks next to "Other Devices / Multimedia Controller". Is there something else I'm missing?? Please advise, and thanks very much for your assistance. 2. Did you run the downloaded file to install it?

The file is now correctly located in the Creative Labs folder. Yes, I did run the installation on this file, and did a restart. However, the basic problem still exists; no sound, and the ??? still show under "Other Devices - Multimedia Controller" in the Device Manager. What else can I be missing here; could there be a physical connection out of whack? BELIEVE me, I DID have sound on this computer until a few months ago. Not sure what happened that "robbed" me of it. Any other thoughts or ideas you have would be very appreciated. Thanks again!!!!!!! Frank Beachem catrat@erols.com 1. Your sound has nothing to do with ATI. Driver should not be in ATI folder. It will just confuse things. 2. Did you run the downloaded file to install it?[/quote] |

From a command prompt type: set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
Open device manager Select View Hidden Devices Delete the multimedia controller with the ?, as well as any creative or soundblaster devices listed under Sound, Video & Game controllers. Uninstall all Creative software. Reboot. When the device is detected again, install the Creative driver

I followed your directions to the "Tee". However, the problem recurs. Even after installing the driver, the items come back. Here's what the device manager lists AFTER I finish the process: Sound, video and game controllers -ATI WDM Rage Theatre Audio -ATI WDM Rage Theatre Video -ATI WDM Specialized MVD Codec -ATI WDM Specialized PCD Codec -ATI WDM TV Audio Crossbar -Audio Codecs -Creative Game Port (removed but it keeps coming back) -Legacy Audio Drivers -Legacy Video Capture Drivers -Media Control Devices -Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device -Video Codecs The ??? still show again for Multimedia Controller. Not sure what else you can suggest here... you've been very helpful but I suspect I may need a hands-on technician to look this over. I don't know what else needs to be done. If you have any other thoughts please advise. Otherwise thanks VERY much for all your assistance here. You certainly helped me narrow the focus on the problem. AS AN ADDENDUM... For the items listed under "Sound, video and game controllers", I only deleted ones that referenced either "Creative" or "Soundblaster". I did NOT delete any others... Also, even though the problem seems to persist, even after installation of the driver you suggested, I am now getting a "Found New Hardware Wizard" popup that wants me to install software for the multimedia controller... not sure if these additional tidbits help, but thought I should mention them. Thanks again, Frank |
