Have you checked to make sure your audio cable is hooked up to the cd player and sound card?

You want one of these

& it wants connecting as said, from the cd unit to the soundcard or if that's onboard to the motherboard itself - it should have come with your cd but they don't always get fitted, shouldn't be dear if you have to buy one.

So all this worked once upon a time & now 'suddenly' doesn't ? & just to be sure, you can play say '.wav' or '.cda' files from your hardisk - but not from the cd ?

Could well be, this is symptomatic of a few things ..

So what does this page say exactly ? ('cos it won't be saying exactly what you said - or I'd be surprised if it did)

& have you got things like burning software or virtual drive software also ? & does the unit produce sound from the headphone socket on the front of the cd/dvd ?

sounds like mebbe the cd playing codec went bye bye...

In device manager, under sound, video and game controllers you should have a device called Media Control Device - in the properties for that should be MCI CD Audio... is it?

Believe it or not but it doesnt have a phone jack on the cd player itself but like I said I can play any type of music once it is downloaded on the computer it just doesnt put out any sound when its coming straight from the cd player to give you more info this it what it says about the driver.:

Multimedia audio controller This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.
Ijust cant find where to install the driver from and Im not for sure if this is the problem I think it is but not certain.

I checked to see if it had that under properties and it does It also said that it is working properly. The one thats causing me problems is under other devices and under it it says Multimedia audio controller. It has the yellow flag.

& you wn the prize for spotting your own issue ! - it was this playing some sounds but not all that fooled us - 'code 1' jut means the driver install is 'wrong' & needs to be retried, both I & Noo got sidetracked by a similarly named thing which is the usual culprit ..

So I don't know what your soundcard is either !

You can try deleting it from device manager & seeing if windows can refind what it is correctly this time - but, failing that, if you tell us some stuff we can work it out & find you an appropriate driver - so tell us please the manufacturer & model of your pc - if its a home build you ought to know whats in it soundcard wise, but if not, there are utilities or visual inspection to discover it.
