No 1024x768 resolution on TP1400

Hi

I see a user here got his old ThinkPad 1400 2621 to finally accept the expected resolution of 1024x768. I tried the same thing he did but this will not work - can't do better than 800x600. All I end up with is the ATI tabs in the settings. If I try to set to the higher resolution the screen content "blows up" and the icons themselves don't get any smaller.
I had to reinistall W98 after a serious crash and had to this manually since the "restore" CD from IBM for this thing did not work.
Any advice greatly appreciated. I use this old TP as a backup and would like to eventually give it to my son but at 800x600 it's a dog.

what size screen is yours? that model thinkpad had screens from 12.1' and up..and since laptop screens have a built in native resolution, you wouldn't get 1024x768 till you are getting close to 15 inch screen

This thing has a diagonal viewable span of 13". It is a 2621-427.
I had not used it in a long time so I cannot remember if it ever had 1024x768 or not. I just think that it should do more than 800x600 and 256 colors.
By the way: I set all BIOS setting to the defaults.

800x600 with at least 16 bit color should be possible..did you install the graphics driver and the chipset driver after installing windows, and do you have a graphics or video expansion setting in the bios? If so it should be set to enabled.

Yeah: the "expansion" setting is active in the BIOS. I also ran the
vftpkr8m.exe and installed DirectX 9 just for fun. I even uninstalled
the monitor and rebooted. Windows correctly found a "new" device
and installed the ATI Mobility-M as the best driver. This is a German machine but it makes no difference if I use the English or the Deutsch driver. After trying all the suggestions this thing will still only do 800x600 at various color settings. That's it. I'll have to dig out the original manual and see if this was ever better. I just have a recollection in my pre-Alzheimers state that this did better.
