What advantages does Celeron have over Pentium?
I am a student who is on a budget. I am shopping around for a new laptop. I don't need an abundance of things just at least 256MB Memory, at least 30GB hard drive space, and at least 1GHZ clock speed. I will just be online, CD burning, and using Office software. From reading different forums, the Celeron is cheaper, doesn't burn up as quickly and the way to go for just the essentials. Am I wrong?
Thanks.

price is about the only advantage that it has over the full version of the processor.
The price is lower cause features are disabled.

Something you dont skimp on though is ram, try and get atleast 512mb. I'm sure that there are some good refurbished model available, and as a university student, you might get access to special discounts and such.
The Celeron is designed as a budget processor, so the prices should be fairly low for a laptop based on the Celeron cpu.

You might also want to consider a laptop with an AMD Athlon XP-M as many of those are being offered at prices comparable to Celeron systems and they are generally better chips.

Most laptops are made by the same manufacturers, regardless of their branding. I would shop based on price/performance. If you are running MS Office and browsing the Internet, CPU speed really doesn't matter. Get 512 MB RAM and a large hard drive with your money instead. Avoid Compaqs. Otherwise, I don't have any very strong feelings about laptops. One brand is not much different from another. AMD based systems are generally better values than Intel.

I should have said Sempron and not Athlon XP-M as those are being phased out.
Slgrieb is right, shop on price and desired features, not by brand. Alot of different companies are selling identical laptops that are just rebranded 3rd party machines.
