Lost My Radio
a friend recently updated my computer with Norton and since then I cannot get my baseball games or any other radio on Windows Media. Since he's safely back home he told me to contact you people for some help.
When I log on to go to listen to a game everything works as before except now instead of saying connecting with % accumulation it goes right to ready but no sound.
Trying just the radio on Media I recieved this message; "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is not supported. If you typed a URL in the URL dialogue box trying using a different transport protocol (two examples).
Sorry but I have no idea where I need to change this?
Also twice in the last week while on line the machine has gone down and rebooted itself.
Any help?

Geezer
Welcome 'wmd' to Windrivers forums (don't go in our 'politicos' section with that name, or you'll get much flak )
Can you give us the error number that media player ought to be kicking out ? (also confirm what version of that we are talking about) by the sounds of it Norton is blocking something that it shouldn't be (coming & going from/to the 'net') or is being 'a bit keen' & we need to set some rules up in norton to alow this traffic through it.
..Also twice in the last week while on line the machine has gone down and rebooted itself. ..
The above though sounds 'not good' & may or mayn't be related, but we ought to check this out too, is this only happening since the addition of Norton ? (& which 'Norton' are we talking about ?, they make a few different products, probably NIS, but just to be sure )

The only number I can find when I go into more information is 0xcood11bb and there is a condition ID; 0x00000000.
As for the rebooting it has rarely but on occasion done that in the past. I was thinking that in order to get baseball do you think I should install real player as that is the other option to connect.
[I]
Appreciate your politco advise but one must remember the name is just an illusion used by a foolheaded bumbler...

Geezer
It's soooo helpful when you actually find 'the fix' ..
0xc00d11bb: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is either not supported by the Player or not supported by the server that is hosting the content.
If you encountered this error by clicking a link on a Web page, the link might not be valid.
If you encountered this error by typing a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) in the Open URL dialog box, try opening the file by using a different transport protocol (for example, "http:" or "rtsp:").
A list of protocols supported by the Player and the correct syntax follows:
mms://server/filename (for example, a file with a .wma, .wmv, .asf, or .mp3 extension)
http://server/filename
rtsp://server/filename
mms://server/sami.asf?SAMI=http://server/sami/sami_demo.smi (SAMI file)
If Windows Media Player supports the protocol and you still cannot play the content, ensure that the Player is configured to use all of its supported protocols.
To configure protocol settings
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Network tab.
In the Streaming protocols area, select all the protocol check boxes.
Note
The supported protocols can be used only to stream digital media files. Windows Media Player cannot be used as a browser.
You can try configuring real player & see if that'll work, but I think its NIS [acting as a firewall] (can you confirm this is what got added?) that is blocking things & no amount of tinkering with anything else is gonna be that helpful..

I've run into various sites that can't be accessed if you are running Norton Firewall (as well as other firewalls) unless the firewall is temporarily disabled. Have a customer who has needed fairly frequent and regular help with pest removals, and after he connected to cable internet, I set him up with Norton Firewall. Within a day he was calling to complain because he couldn't access some of his favorite porno sites. Could there be a moral here?

Well I went to Tools and clicked on internet options, there was no just Options. I then could find no Network tab but I did go to Advanced and clicked on what was there but still no sound. I will be talking to my friend this evening and get back to you on this firewall thing. I do believe that is what he upgraded but will make sure. Thanks for taking the time.

I have Norton but don't see anything in there that says firewall but I did unable it and tried radio still no sound...it seems when I do try and hook that up it just skips right to ready without showing any connecting sequence...went to control panel and I have a windows firewall that was off and I turned on but still no sound...I'm sure this is not much help to you but any advice you can give me would be appreciated...
I should have bought a MAC.....

To get back to -ed's earlier question, have you tried RealPlayer? And, BTW, what radio sites are you connecting to? There are bunches of different plugins for different Internet radio sites. Live365 uses their own player, there is Abacast, etc. Some sites can fail to work correctly if you have popups blocked, too.

Have tried downloading RealPlayer but no luck. As for radio sites my main desire is to listen to major league baseball. I tried radio stations offered on WinMedia, nothing.
It looks like I'm out of luck unless I take it in....Thanks anyway.

I am having the same issue, except that my OS is WIN2000. Windows Media Player will not play streaming audio (.asx files). I get the same "0xC00D11BB: Cannot play the file" error. Also, from time to time, if I try to play streaming video from a site where the player is imbedded in the browser, my workstation will shut right down and reboot itself.
A friend recommended installing Active X (dxwebsetup.exe), but this had no affect. I am behind a proxy so I tried running a proxy bypass application called Proxomitron and this had no affect. I do not run a firewall locally.
