Canon S600, Win XP, spool doesn't clear after printing

Here's a doozy:

Problem: The print queue does not clear after printing one or two documents, making it impossible to print additional documents without restarting the computer one or two times

Specs: Canon S600, Win XP upgrade from Win98, parallel connection

What's Been Tried So Far:
- uninstall and reinstall of Canon XP driver
- noticed that old HP printer info was still in win.ini and registry, so I deleted that, which actually seemed to fix the problem for a while
- removed old Canon registry entries from previous Win98 install

There is also an entry in win.ini for Postscript FILE and Postscript LPT1, but deactivating those didn't seem to help.

I am at a loss. It seems like a spool problem, but it's hard to know for sure. Any ideas?

You say you've reinstalled the drivers but do you have the latest ones from Canon. If not try installing those & let us know!

Unfortunately, I did indeed install the latest drivers. I even tried bypassing the spool and printing directly to the printer, but somehow a spool is still utilized and still gets blocked. I've tried deselecting all win.ini references to LPT1 that were not Canon's, to no avail. I am really stumped.

Since you're having all of these problems with the parallel port, have you tried using the USB interface instead? Just an idea...

Also, notice the links there for Quick Start Guide and User's Guides. Might be something in there that you're missing.

Hi Don:

I think that you may be on the right track. While I don't have a USB cable yet, you put the thought in my head to try connecting my printer directly to my computer, rather than chaining it through my scanner. It seems like it may have done the trick, though I'll have to give it a few days before I'm convinced (I've been given false hopes before!). In the meantime, I probably will go ahead and pick up a USB cable--it seems like good practice to not chain devices whenever possible, and USB is a superior connection, anyway.

If this doesn't work, I'm going to have to resort to an XP reinstall--yech. I'll keep you posted.

I bet you've got it figured out. I know that a lot of HP's printers don't like going through certain switch boxes and/or scanners. It interferes with the bi-directional communications of that unit.
