Plextor SATA DVD-RW PX-712A, Driver error.

When PnP detects my DVD-Rom, the driver it uses doesn't function with my drive. Sometime about 3 weeks ago it decided to insall itself but I had to reload windows so I lost the config for it...

If someone could tell me where to get drivers to support it or how to make windows select the correct driver that would be great.

Computer:
Win XP Pro
AMD Athlon64 3000+
20gig West Digi
Gigabyte board w/onboard SATA/Raid controller
Plextor DVD-RW PX-712a
Driver installed: VIA Serial ATA RAID controller..

Also, the drive is recognized by the MB on startup. The problem, as far as I'm concerned, resides in windows...

To help things either ya dont have sata drive or ya have mentioned wrong model
Plextor DVD-RW PX-712A is IDE &
Plextor DVD-RW PX-712SA is SATA.

Check this link (see under Gigabyte) and connect according to instructions for your motherboard model if mentioned there.

Already checked the help file on the Plextor site.... No help.

Try this
Goto disk management by Right Clicking on 'My Computer' :> click 'Manage' Computer Management will open up..
Now Click on + sign before storage..and click on 'Disk Management' look in right pane ...
See if your DVD has not been assigned drive letter if so right click on drive and assign a drive letter...

Windows does not register it as a DVD-Rom, or any device for that matter....

Basically, the motherboard knows it is attached and that it is Plextor DVD-RW drive. Windows does not recognize that a drive is attached and, instead, installs drivers for the SATA/RAID controller without considering the attached device....I know whats wrong I just have no clue how to fix it..

Hiya,
From a quick prod on the Plextor site, it should be recognised automatically when you have installed the latest drivers for your SATA/RAID controller. You ought to have recived a disk with your motherboard (Normally floppy) with 'proper' SATA/RAID drivers on it, as opposed to the generic ones that Windows provides. If you can't find this, then post your motherboard model, and I'll dig them out.

No. Drivers for my motherboard have been loaded. When it is recognized by windows, the GIGA-BYTE VIA drivers are loaded... The driver that it loads is for a RAID controller rather than SATA....

Have you inadvertently turned on the raid function of your motherboard ? (this should be finding a number of sata channels & installing a controller for each of those, NOT trying to do anything about any RAID controllers)

Lots of bioses have this 'really badly put' & its tricky to see what to do if you have just one sata drive or like you a sata device that can't be in a RAID. Any sata contoller references found in bios need to be enabled, but any references in bios about RAID need to be off in either of those situations..

In my Bios, I can chose to enable or disable the SATA channels. I can then select a set IRQ, auto, or disable for each of the 2 channels...There are no settings in bios for Raid...

Oh yes there are - but Gigabyte implemented it 'weird' ... get or download your mannual & look for the bit "create your disk array" (I know we don't want one, but apparently we have to tell it !), you press "cntrl-g" just after it posts apparently to get to this ..

& you'll find that there are 5 options for how we want anything attached to this controller (again this board is strange & the RAID chip also doubles as the IDE controller) - we want to set this as option 5 "normal" & that then should mean windoze will find an ide controller & not a RAID controller - hopefully that is ..
