STOP Error: Driver_power_state_failure

After 2 days of trouble-shooting a Microsoft Windows XP Home SP2 stop error message, i've finally come across the source of the problem. There were 3 driver files installed in C:\windows\system32\drivers that were responsible for the cause of a fatal stop error message on shutdown.

STOP Error: Driver_power_state_failure
STOP: 0x0000009F (0x00000500,0x00000002,0x82A78020,0x82F7D2B8)

The above blue screen “stop” error message occurred during the shutdown process in safemode and normal mode. Error seems to be related to power management (when system hibernates, restarts, resumes from standby or shuts down).

After removing these 3 files (bsaspi32.sys, CDRBSDRV.sys, cdrbsvsd.sys) and removing the lower filters from the optical drive registry pertaining to B's Clip Burning software my problem went away and my optical drive was being detected properly.

In my opinion its best to stay far away from B's CLiP software. Stick to Ahead Nero burning software =)

This behavior is not limited only to device drivers. It can also occur with file system filter drivers (for instance, drivers installed by an anti-virus, Remote Control, backup program as well as cd buring software). Uninstall any non-critical devices and software to help isolate the device/software that may be causing the problem and like I had done, manually searched through the C:\windows\system32\drivers folder for any third party device drivers and rename them or relocated them to a different folder while trying to isolate the source of the problem through a process of elimination.

Renaming files located in the C:\windows\system32\drivers folder can not be performed while windows is running in either safemode or normal mode. It's best to rename these files on a remote computer (physically attaching the drive to a test computer or.... using BartPE on a bootable CD to make the necessary changes. Otherwise the active driver being modified will be reinstated by the system before the computer reboots and you'll just find yourself going in circles.
